 Calling all Ferris faculty members! Are you curious about the potential of open textbooks and open educational resources (OER) to address affordability concerns while enhancing student success? Are you passionate about creating an inclusive and accessible learning environment for your students? Join us for a session that will delve into the world of open education, debunk misconceptions, provide you with strategies to integrate open textbooks seamlessly into your teaching practice, and introduce you to new incentives for incorporating OER into your classroom.

Session Objectives:

  1. Open and OER Demystified: Gain a clear understanding of what open education is and what it isn't, exploring the range of open educational resources beyond just textbooks. 
  2. The Affordability-Student Success Nexus: Delve into the profound impact of affordability issues on student academic success and examine how open textbooks can serve as a solution to alleviate financial burdens and increase access to learning materials. 
  3. Overcoming Faculty Barriers: Identify common obstacles that hinder faculty adoption of open textbooks.
  4. Integrating Open Education: Explore practical ways to seamlessly integrate open education practices into your existing workflows and teaching strategies. 
  5. Supporting Faculty Adoption: Uncover the support available to faculty interested in adopting open textbooks, including repositories to locate textbooks and other materials that align with your specific curriculum needs.

The Vision and Learning Link

Have you ever had a student who struggled academically even though they seem to "get" the material? Do they seem to work slower than their peers? Are they re-reading passages and still not comprehending what they just read? Perhaps they suffer from frequent headaches? That student might have an undiagnosed vision problem that is affecting their learning. This presentation will discuss how to recognize common vision problems that affect learning and how you can help these students. 

Session Objectives:

  1. Recognize symptoms of vision related learning problems as they manifest in a classroom
  2. Understand how vision and learning are related 
  3. Know how to screen a student for referral to investigate potential vision problems 
  4. Begin the referral process for students who need it

  1. Get a comprehensive overview of the program, its goals, and how it supports faculty members in adopting, adapting, and creating OER.
  2. Learn the application process, including eligibility criteria, deadlines, and the information you need to submit.

  3. Map a learning activity or assessment within Canvas, to a course learning outcome.
