Security Updates for Android

Critical security updates for both Android and iOS devices are available to download. You should make sure you have the latest system versions on your devices. You can check by following the directions below. It is also recommended that University issued mobile devices be pin or password protected. To learn how to PIN or password protect, see below.

It is recommended to have your mobile device perform automatic backups. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Access the Main Menu and select “Settings”
  2. Scroll down and select “Backup and Reset”
  3. Verify “Back up my data” is turned on
  4. Verify the “Backup account” is correct

To check for updates, follow these steps:

  1. Access the Main Menu and Select “Settings”
  2. Scroll down and select either “About Phone” and then select “System Update” or just
  3. “System Update”, which ever pertains to your phone
  4. Follow the on screen prompts

It is recommended to check which version of Android you are using. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Access the Main Menu and select “Settings”
  2. Scroll down and select “About Phone”
  3. The screen should display your Android Version, along with other information about your phone

If you do not have version 4.4 or higher, it is strongly recommended to install the Firefox web browser from the Play Store, you can download Chrome if you prefer. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Find and open the Play Store App
  2. Once opened, select the magnifying glass and type in, “Firefox Browser”
  3. A drop down menu should appear, select the appropriate entry
  4. A page should open up showing the Firefox Browser for Android by Mozilla app. Select “Install” and follow the on screen prompts (if you do not have a payment option selected, select skip to bypass entering in a payment option. 

To create a PIN or password for your mobile device, follow these steps:

  1. Access the Main Menu and select “Settings”
  2. Scroll down and select “Lock Screen” or “Security"
  3. Select “Screen Lock” and then select either “PIN” or Password”
  4. Follow the on screen prompts
