Sonali Kurup, Associate Professor in the College of Pharmacy, was awarded a $377,805 grant from the National Institutes of Health- National Cancer Institute for the project “Novel dual-targeted inhibitors of EGFR and aurora kinase for lung cancer”. This 3-year R15 grant will fund research in drug discovery of new anti-cancer agents. The program is funded by the highly competitive NIH Research Enhancement Award Program (REAP), that aims to stimulate basic and clinical research that engage undergraduate and professional students in a meritorious research project, and to strengthen the research environment of the educational institution.
Minji Sohn, Associate Professor in the College of Pharmacy, was awarded a $172,945 grant from Emergent BioSolutions for the study “Assessment of naloxone co-prescribing mandates on naloxone dispensing, opioid overdose mortality and high-dose opioid prescribing”. This 1-year project involves co-investigators Emmanuel Jadhav and Yong Xu in the Colleges of Health Professions and Business, and collaborators at the University of Kentucky’s Institute for Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy.
Michael Klepser and Michelle Sahr received a $49,149 grant from MDHHS for the 1815 Prevent and Manage Cardiovascular Disease program. The title of their project is "Collaborative community pharmacy based management of individuals with hypertension and dyslipidemia in rural northern Michigan".
Michelle Sahr received a $52,000 grant for the project “Physician-Pharmacist Collaboration to Improve Cardiovascular Disease in Rural Communities”. The grant is funded by the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation.
Deedee Stakley is Project Director for a new $669,216 grant from the US Department of Agriculture's Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grant program (USDA Press Release). The project, entitled "FerrisNow STEM Dual Enrollment Virtual Reality (FerrisNowVR) Initiative", will create a system of hubs and end-users that establishes virtual reality (VR) equipped classrooms in 17 rural high schools and three career and technical education centers throughout 11 counties. These classrooms will allow students to participate in synchronous online Science, Technology, Engineering and Math-based dual enrollment courses with immersive VR technology. Project leadership includes Andrew Peterson and Tracy Russo. USDA State Director for Michigan Jason Allen noted that “Ferris State is one of many universities that is leveraging educational resources to reach rural areas and we are always looking for more partners. Participating schools are located in Benzie, Isabella, Kent, Lake, Mason, Mecosta, Missaukee, Montcalm, Oceana, Osceola and Wexford counties.
Congrats to Jason Bentley, Dean of RSS and Flite, and Melinda Isler, Archivist, for receiving a grant from Libraries of Michigan - LSTA Improving Access to Information Program ($8,304). The funding for this project will allow Ferris to migrate from maintaining servers and associated software upgrades to a cloud-hosted repository making access, query and retrieval of materials possible through a more user-friendly and sustainable platform.
Joy Pulsifer, Dean of Student Life, received a $300,000 grant from the US Department of Justice
for the FY2020 Office on Violence against Women (OVW) Grant Program to Reduce Domestic
Violence, Dating Violence, Sexual Assault and Stalking on Campus. This 3-year grant
will support programs to educate campus and law enforcement on violence and assault,
and provide 24-hour confidential victim services and advocacy.
Gail Bullard, College of Health Professions, and Scott Sexton, College of Pharmacy, are Co-Project Directors on a FY2020 HRSA Implementation grant awarded for $1,000,000. The 3-year project will focus on education and prevention among community partners to address the opioid crisis in west-central Michigan. This grant is an extension to the HRSA Planning grant awarded to FSU in 2019.
Eric Nybo, Associate Professor in the College of Pharmacy, received two federal research grants to support cancer drug research. He received a National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Enhancement for Undergraduate institutions (REU) award in the amount of $407,900. He also received a R15 REAP grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) - National Cancer Institute (NCI) in the amount of $390,000.
Joy Pulsifer, Dean of Student Life, was recently awarded 2 grants from the Michigan State Police - Campus Sexual Assault Grant Program. She received $49,200 for the Campus Safety Project: Security/Surveillance cameras, and $50,000 for a Violence Prevention Coordinator.
Greg Gogolin, Professor in the College of Business, received a grant from the US Department of Defense (DoD) in the amount of $183,800 to support students and expand the Cyber Competition Center. He also received a DOD Capacity building grant for $199,971.
Daniel Taylor, Michigan College of Optometry was awarded an MEDC Advance Proof of Concept Grant for $23,284, to further support development of his "Protoconch" invented technology.
Sonali Kurup, College of Pharmacy, was awarded an MEDC Advance Proof of Concept Grant for $23,609, to further develop small molecule inhibitors of EGFR/AURK to treat mult-drug resistant lung cancers.
Victor Piercey, College of Arts, Sciences and Education, received an award from NSF for $16,465. His project is a collaboration with Fitchburg State University and Georgetown University.
Several faculty members have submitted for MCAN grants in the amount of $10,000 each.
Of the six that were submitted, four have been awarded. Kaylee Burke, Center for Latino Studies, received the COVID-19 Response grant along with the Innovation
grant. Angela Roman, CLACS office just received her notice of award Deedee Stakley was the other award recipient.
