Student Research Fellowship Opportunities Return in 2021, Diverse Opportunities Encouraged

The opportunity to collaborate with a Ferris State University faculty member and gain hands-on experience returns this summer. Submissions of proposals for Student Research Fellowship projects continue through 5 p.m. Friday, March 12.

Office of Research and Sponsored Projects Director Tom Dowling said proposals that provide fellowships for students from geographically under-represented areas, those with disabilities and other diverse groups are encouraged. He noted all submissions would receive due consideration. Fellowships also include remote learning projects during the continuing COVID-19 pandemic.

“Data-based research fellowships certainly have the potential to be taken up virtually,” Dowling said. “We also expect to have studies underway in the Shimadzu Core Laboratory for Academic and Research Excellence, along with other university laboratories. We are likely to see a mix of proposals.”

Faculty in the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) disciplines, humanities, social sciences and health sciences can involve students in a 10-week, full-time schedule to take part in these research projects. Dowling said as, with those rules established for face-to-face instruction on the Big Rapids campus, SRF project work will proceed following appropriate health protocols.

“Our faculty are well aware of the requirements to assure student health and safety, as well as following their own best practices,” Dowling said. “At this time, we ask that they finalize their project plans with the students and complete all necessary application details. These fellowships are a great opportunity to build on a student’s bank of learning experiences and their resumes.”

Student Research Fellowship presentations are planned for a symposium in August. Questions about the fellowship application process are welcomed by email.
