Student Research Fellowship Projects Resume, Collaborative Studies Promote Summer Learning

Ferris State University College of Arts, Sciences and Education, College of Health Professions and College of Pharmacy students will participate in the 10th offering of Student Research Fellowships during Summer 2021.

Because of COVID-19, the program did not take place in 2020. This summer, for 10 weeks, seven students are scheduled to work full time with faculty members on various topics.

Here are the SRF fellows, their mentors and projects:

Student Research Fellow: Heather Schoenherr, from Grant, Biochemistry Faculty Mentor: Daniel Adsmond, Arts, Sciences and Education, Physical Sciences 
Project: An investigation of the role of conformation and energetics in the ability of sulfa drugs to form cocrystals

Student Research Fellow: Kiara Y. Torres Garcia, a native of Gurabo, Puerto Rico, Pharmacy 
Faculty Mentor: Qian Ding, Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Sciences 
Project: The association of disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) on Alzheimer’s disease

Student Research Fellow: Wyatt Varga, from New Baltimore, Biology

Project: Effects of hydrogen bonding on viscosity in 1-butanol

Student Research Fellow: Burgess Ingersoll, of Byron Center, Pre-Med

Project: Design and synthesis of novel dual-targeted EGFR/AURK inhibitors as anticancer agents

Student Research Fellow: Benjamin Vander Ploeg, from Hudsonville, Biochemistry

Project: Canonical approaches to triatomic molecules

Student Research Fellow: Cole McGowen, from White Cloud, Biology

Project: Archaeal and eukaryotic diversity of a central Michigan bog

These collaborative effort results will be presented during a Student Research Fellowship Symposium as part of the Faculty Welcome Back Week to kick off the 2021-22 academic year.
