The Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act, codified at 20 U.S.C. § 1092(f) with implementing regulations at 34 C.F.R. § 668.46, requires all colleges and universities that participate in federal financial aid programs to collect, maintain, and disclose information about crimes occurring on and near their campuses.
Compliance is monitored by the U.S. Department of Education, which has the authority to impose civil penalties for violations. As of 2025, institutions may be fined up to $71,545 per violation, with the amount adjusted annually for inflation. Institutions may also face suspension from participating in federal student financial aid programs for noncompliance.
The Ferris State University Department of Public Safety (FSU DPS) is required to maintain a daily crime and fire log that records all incidents reported to the department. Each log entry must include the nature, date, time, and general location of the reported crime, along with the disposition of the complaint, if known. The most recent 60 days of log entries must be available for public inspection during normal business hours. Information older than 60 days must be provided within two business days upon request.
Ferris State University Department of Public Safety (FSU DPS) publishes a Crime/Incident
Map to show recent calls for service and crime-related activity in and around campus.
The map is populated using incident summaries provided by Meceola Central Dispatch
for responses by the Big Rapids Police Department (BRPD) and FSU DPS. It is intended
to supplement the federally required Daily Crime Log by giving the community a broader
view of the types of incidents officers are responding to on campus and within the
City of Big Rapids.
Updates: Every 2 business days.
Source: Meceola Central Dispatch calls for service involving BRPD and FSU DPS.
Window shown: Generally the previous 10 days of incidents.
Filters: View by classification, date, location, and disposition.
Data are preliminary, subject to change, and may contain errors or omissions. Locations
may be generalized for privacy/safety; sensitive details may be withheld. The map
is not a substitute for Timely Warnings or Emergency Notifications, and it is not
the official record of Clery statistics. For the official, continuously maintained
record of crimes reported to FSU DPS within Clery geography, see the Daily Crime Log.
To report a crime or concern: FSU DPS (231) 591-5000 or 911 in an emergency.
