Clery Crime Log

Clery Crime & Fire Log

The Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act, codified at 20 U.S.C. § 1092(f) with implementing regulations at 34 C.F.R. § 668.46, requires all colleges and universities that participate in federal financial aid programs to collect, maintain, and disclose information about crimes occurring on and near their campuses.

Compliance is monitored by the U.S. Department of Education, which has the authority to impose civil penalties for violations. As of 2025, institutions may be fined up to $71,545 per violation, with the amount adjusted annually for inflation. Institutions may also face suspension from participating in federal student financial aid programs for noncompliance.

The Ferris State University Department of Public Safety (FSU DPS) is required to maintain a daily crime and fire log that records all incidents reported to the department. Each log entry must include the nature, date, time, and general location of the reported crime, along with the disposition of the complaint, if known. The most recent 60 days of log entries must be available for public inspection during normal business hours. Information older than 60 days must be provided within two business days upon request.
