If you were selected for the Verification Process, you are required to provide tax documentation from 2023 - whether you filed a tax return or not. The recommended method of verifying tax information is by consenting and transferring tax information into the FAFSA using the IRS Direct Data Exchange tool. Students and their FAFSA contributors - which includes parents, stepparents and student spouses (if applicable), may use the contributor link sent by federal student aid to consent to the IRS Direct Data Transfer of tax information from the IRS into the FAFSA, even if the contributor was note required to file a 2023 federal tax return.
If you are unable to utilize the IRS Direct Data Exchange Tool, you may obtain an IRS Verification of Non-Filing Letter by visiting the irs.gov webpage, and selecting "Get Your Tax Record". Scroll to the Form 4506, Request for Copy of Tax Return link on that page, then follow the instructions below for completing and submitting the request form:
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Independent students and parent's of dependent students that did not file taxes must attempt to obtain a letter of non-filing from the IRS to complete the verification process. If you do not receive the Verification of Non-Filing letter within 10 days of submitting your request, please contact the Financial Aid office at 231 591-2110 or [email protected] for further instructions.
