Advanced Practical Training for Opticians

 

The Michigan College of Optometry of Ferris State University, in its ongoing role of supporting the educational needs of eyecare professionals, is offering an Advanced Practical Training for Opticians.

This course is being held as a response to the overwhelming requests for an additional training event focused upon more advanced Opticianry skills.  There will be a limit of 12 attendees per event to ensure maximum interaction with our expert instructor.

The advanced training program is designed for those who have extensive experience working as an optician and have been able to build a good understanding of the science of optics and ophthalmic lenses.  The attendee should possess a working knowledge of progressive addition lenses, base curves, ophthalmic lens materials (plastic, polycarbonate, high index material, etc.) in order to maximize learning.  If the attendee does not have these prerequisites, they should attend our Basic Practical Training for Opticians course which introduces the basic foundation for working in the optical field. 

Course Content

  • Understanding Lenses - 1 hour (ABO Level II)
  • Prism In Lenses -2 hours (ABO Level II)
  • Troubleshooting - 1 hour (ABO Level II)
  • Advanced Lensometry - 2 hours (ABO Level II)

Tracy Waldo, ABOC, NCLEC
Tracy Waldo is the Ophthalmic Lab Manager for the University Eye Center in the Michigan College of Optometry (MCO), Ferris State University. In 1998 she earned her A.A.S. in Opticianry at Ferris State University as well as her ABOC and NCLC. She is proficient in all aspects of opticianry from dispensing spectacles and contact lenses to surfacing ophthalmic lenses. She worked in private practice prior to joining the staff at MCO in 2004. Tracy consults with the Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO), Salus University in the Doctor of Optometry Scholars program advanced studies courses on opticianry related topics. In addition, she lectures regionally on topics related to opticianry.
