FAFSA Tips

  • Before you can file the FAFSA, you will need to create a user name and password called an FSA ID.
  • You will do this on the studentaid.gov website.  Select Create Account next to the log in box.
  • Unless you are 24, married, supporting a child or other legal dependent, a veteran or on active duty military service or have other special circumstances, at least one of your biological or adoptive parents will also need an FSA ID to sign your FAFSA.
  • The parent that provides most of your financial support (FAFSA contributor) is the parent that goes on your FAFSA, even if you live with the other parent. If your FAFSA contributor is currently married to a stepparent, the stepparent is also a FAFSA contributor. The tax filing status of your FAFSA contributors determines whether one or both contributors needs as FSA ID. If parent and stepparent filed a joint tax return for the tax year of record (2023 tax year for 2025-26 FAFSA), then only one contributor needs an FSA ID. If your contributor and  stepparent filed their taxes as "Married Filing Separately", then both will need to obtain FSA ID log-in credentials.
  • Once you and your parent(s) each have an FSA ID, after January 1, 2025, select "Complete the FAFSA Form" on the right menu of the studentaid.gov webpage or use the "Start Your FAFSA Now" link above.

After You Have Submitted Your FAFSA
