The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule is a comprehensive Federal Protection for the privacy of protected health information (PHI) and establishes the conditions under which PHI may be used or disclosed by covered entities for research purposes.
What is Protected Health Information (PHI)?
PHI is defined as individually identifiable health information transmitted or maintained
by a covered entity or its business associates in any form or medium (45 CFR 160.163).
