Abstract: The Michigan Health Sciences Libraries Association's purpose is to promote excellence in health sciences librarianship. The collection contains the records of the organization and regional organizations and is a mixture of correspondence, minutes, membership and program materials. The collection spans the dates 1971-2002.
Biographical/Historical Note
Michigan health sciences librarians have been active in resource sharing and cooperative ventures since World War II. Regional groups first developed in 1962 when the Metropolitan Detroit Medical Library Group was formed. They produced the first union list of health sciences serials in the state. Between 1972-1980 the various regional groups merged into the Michigan Health Sciences Libraries Association. The Metro Detroit Medical Library Group sponsored the first statewide conference in June 1973 as a means of exchanging information among bio-medical librarians at a state level. This was followed by a conferences sponsored by the Valley Regional Health Sciences Librarians, Western Michigan Health Science LIbrarians and the Upper Peninsula Health Science Libraries Grou.
The aim of the group was to join the university/research librarians with the lone librarian to a local hospital in order to facilitate informational resource exchange. This was seen as a valuable addition to the work already done by the regional groups. The formal organization of the group occurred at a conference on Mackinac Island in September 1977. Faith Van Toll was elected the first president, Anthos Hungerford as president-elect, and Doris Asher as the first secretary.
Early goals of the organization included serving as the vehicle for distribution for the statewide Union List of Serials. They also provided outreach for the establishment of new libraries, and provided consulting advice on technology project. They sponsored an annual conference and published a newsletter.
The Michigan Health Sciences Libraries Association continues with its goals of cooperation between institutions. They have conducted a number of surveys providing information about the status of the profession. They later created a formal affiliation with the Medical Libraries Association.
Scope and Contents Note
The Michigan Health Sciences Libraries Association's (MHSLA)purpose is to promote excellence in health sciences librarianship by providing its membership with opportunities for professional growth, fostering communication between members and their regions, facilitating resource sharing, increasing awareness of new technologies, providing high-quality continuing education, and conducting research in health sciences information services.
The records contain evidence of this purpose, but also of the evolving organizational structure of the association. The Association evolved from several regional organizations and there are records of several of these organizations during the formative years- including Health Information Resources Association, Michigan Statewide Health Sciences Libraries Union List of Serials. Pontiac Area Instructional Resource Center and Valley Regional Health Sciences Libraries Association. Like MHSLA, the records are a typical mixture of administration records including bylaws, membership lists, minutes, program records and treasurer's reports.
This collection contains a fairly complete listing of conference records. Committee records are split between being listed by committee, or as part of a complete set of reports within a single year. Other records are listed either by name or by type of record (such as membership records).
