Historical Note

In February 1971, the Association of Michigan Collegiate Faculties (commonly known as ACMF) was created. An assembly modeled after many college senates, it had two representatives from each of Michigan's public colleges and universities. They met four times per year in Lansing (a central meeting point). A typical meeting consisted of a dinner the night before, and a full day of meetings the following day. The purpose was the following:

  • To serve as a clearing house for an exchange of information about the faculty needs and concerns of each institution, regardless of union affiliate
  • To serve as a spokesman for faculty with state legislatures regarding issues that affect higher education
  • To provide for research, study and investigation of issues pertaining to higher education

Each member paid a fee. Some fees were covered by the universities, while others were taken out of faculty dues. The fees covered the services contracted out to the Michigan League of Women Voters. In cooperation with the Michigan Conference of the American Association of University Professors, Virginia Delano (a League employee) wrote reports and updates regarding issues of higher education that came up in the state legislature. This allowed members to be aware and coordinate lobbying efforts, primarily through letter writing campaigns.

The ACMF was involved in a variety of activities during its existence. Among them was a faculty exchange program, representation on statewide commissions, involvement in writing retirement legislation and the Michigan Higher Education Funding Model.

The ACMF also sponsored a series of symposium on important issues from 1973-1983. Topics of such symposia included: program budget evaluation, plans for Michigan Higher Education, coordination in Michigan higher education, higher education funding models, future needs for business and industry , and the issues of appropriation and taxes.

It is unclear why the ACMF ceased to exist. In the 1980s, members began to drop out as institutional funding deteriorated. The last known meeting was in February 1990.

Scope and Content Note

The Association of Michigan Collegiate Faculties served as an assembly organization for state college and university faculty. They dealt with a variety of issues that on an individual campus may be dealt with either by the collective bargaining unit/union or by some type of governing council like a faculty senate.

Within the records, one finds the typical governance records. There is a complete set of minutes and agendas for meetings between 1971-1990, filed under meeting records. Additionally, there are other folders relating to proposals and resolutions passed by the body which help to show the activities. There is also an extensive correspondence file as kept by the individual chairmen. It is divided into incoming and outgoing correspondence and filed chronologically. A folder on constitutions/bylaws documents the changes of the organizational structure. The financial activities of the group can be traced both through the treasurer's reports and through the correspondence. Institutional reports given at each meeting, help to provide a snapshot of activities for that particular institution at that time.

The ACMF was heavily involved in the evolution of funding for higher education in Michigan. This interest can be seen in the Michigan Higher Education Funding Proposals files, the reports, and the correspondence to various legislators and Governor William Milikin.
