Historical Note

The earliest sabbatical leaves were granted during the 1967-1968 school year to: Herbert Carson, School of General Education, George Holcomb, School of General Education and Roy Newton, School of General Education. The first applications recommended to the Board of Control in June 1966 occurred nearly two years after the policy was passed in 1964. The policy, as studied by the Representative Faculty Council from 1961-1964, gave the Board of Control the final approval over sabbatical leaves based on recommendations from the President. It also gave flexibility for times of financial crisis, the validity of proposed areas of study and the difficulties in filling instructional gaps during the sabbatical period.

According to the original policy, the purpose of such leaves were to improve professional development through activity and study. Faculty would receive some portion of their normal compensation, dependent on their activities. It was not intended for the completion of advanced degrees. Through the completion of a sabbatical, a teacher or administrator would be more "useful" to Ferris State College when they returned. It was consistent with most universities of the time, both large and small (although smaller universities tended to give out sabbaticals less frequently).

Sabbatical leave remains not only a board policy, but a contract negotiated issue. In the Ferris Faculty- MEA, NEA contract negotiated in 2002, Section 10 deals with paid leaves of absence, including sabbatical leave. The contract notes that sabbatical leave is used to "encourage members to pursue special studies, investigations, and research that will contribute to their professional development and competence." Leaves may comprise a quarter, semester or some combination of the above dependent upon the university calender at the time. A report on the activities undertaken during the sabbatical is submitted to the university.

Scope and Content Note

Faculty who are granted a sabbatical leave, as outlined in the faculty contract are required to submit a report on their activities to the Vice-President for Academic Affairs. These reports vary greatly in length and complexity, but most include some component in a written format.

Reports date back to 1967 and are fairly complete until 1978. Because of reduced efforts in acquisition of such reports, the collection is sporadic between 1979-2003. Titles are not given in the listing and some departments have been reclassified into the College naming structure from the time that the collection was initially processed (2003). Several faculty members have multiple reports in the collection.

Early sabbatical reports could be filed as late as 2-3 quarters after the actual leave period. Because of this, some of the dates of the early sabbaticals are unclear. For clarification, a list was created detailing all sabbaticals granted by the Board of Trustees between 1967-1980 is located in the first folder of the first box of the collection.

These records do not contain any correspondence or documentation on the selection of sabbatical leave recipients.

Arrangement
