In April 1966, the office of the president at Ferris State College, received notification from the national AFCSME-CIO chapter (American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees) that there was a movement to unionize workers on the campus. They were the first, but many were to follow shortly. All of these organizations were seeking formal written contracts that they felt would provide a more equitable working environment.
The first copies of existing contracts held by the University Archives date back to 1970 and cover clerical-technical workers, as well as AFSCME employees. In 1973, the first contract was signed with the Ferris Faculty Association, an affiliated member of the Michigan Education Association-National Education Association. The first Teamsters affiliate contract begins in 1976. Contracts cover a two to six year period and cover a variety of employment issues relevant to the various groups.
Union contracts usually run from twenty to eighty pages and cover the same basic set of rights and responsibilities. It begins with the contractual provision allowing the university and union to recognize each other's role- including the right to meet, conduct business and provide information. There are also sections relating to the rights and responsibilities of the employee group including such categories as tenure, professional conduct, access to personnel records, benefits (including tuition, health insurance and retirement), personnel reviews, seniority, absences and grievance and retrenchment procedures.
This collection contains only the final proposals and official contract copies. There is no supporting documentation relating to contract negotiations available. Also, some copies of contracts may be missing from the collection.
The papers are contained in a single series.
