The papers contain personal and teaching information, in addition to project data relating to projects promoting the arts on campus.

Biographical/Historical Note

Dacho Dachoff was born in Montreal, Canada on November 14, 1921. He later became a naturalized citizen. He received his primary and secondary education in the Detroit area. He attended numerous universities in Michigan, but received in B.S. (1946), M.Ed. (1947), and Ed.D. (1963) all from Wayne State University. Joining the college faculty in 1955, Dachoff quickly became central to the music program to the campus. Dachoff taught classes in music appreciation and music fundamentals as well as being head of the program. However, his activities were not limited to the classroom. He reinstituted the Men's Glee Club which had been defunct since the late 1920s. From 1957-1967, Dachoff ran the Honors Band Clinic for local high schools. This was also used as a recruiting tool. Dachoff founded and conducted the College-Community Summer Band in 1965 and the Ferris State College-Community Orchestra in 1967. He also played a critical role in getting students involved in national organizations, including the Ferris Bands Honor Society (1963), and in 1966, Kappa Kappa Psi (a band recognition society for men) and Tau Beta Kappa, (a band recognition society for women). Not all of these were music related. In 1965 he chartered Omicron Beta Kappa, the Local Leadership Honors Society and in 1971 Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society.

During the period of 1955-1967, the music activities program grew from a one-man department to a staff of four full-time teachers and from a one-room rehearsal area in the West Building to the building of the Music Center in 1961-1962. In the fall of 1977, the fifth faculty member was added who took over the orchestra and the jazz program when Dachoff relinquished his teaching and conducting position to serve as the Special Assistant to the President for the Arts.

Not only was Dachoff active in the music program, but also worked hard to improve the quality and role of arts and cultural activities on campus. In 1958, Dachoff began the Festival of the Arts, a festival celebrating art in all forms and served as its chairman for 25 years. As chair of the General Education Convocation Committee, he brought many important cultural events to the campus. Additionally, Dachoff inaugurated the Sculpture-in-the-Environment Project which culminated in the first major outdoor sculpture on campus in 1980 and was funded in part by a grant from the Michigan Council for the Arts. Dachoff also spearheaded the drive for an FSC art gallery and served as its first director from 1978-1983. He served as the project director of the Centennial Sculpture Project in 1982-1983.

Dachoff retired from Ferris in December 1983. He married twice and had three children.

Scope and Contents Note

Dachoff served in a number of positions relating to the music program and his more general interest in the arts. Most of the collection materials relate to this interest.

The first series includes correspondence, newsclippings, and reports relating to events and programs of the music program. Of special note are some historical research files, compiled by Dachoff when working on a Ferris Heritage Lecture presentation. The series of annual reports helps to chronologically trace the activities of the department, and are supplemented by a series of photo scrapbooks, also arranged chronologically. Other administrative records such as faculty minutes and correspondence are also included. Examples of Dachoff's classroom work can be found under the topic music education. There are small subsets of records pertaining specifically to the band, choir and orchestra.

The second series, Arts on Campus, has a varied set of documents relating to the various committees Dachoff served on. Dachoff did serve as Special Assistant to the President for the Arts from 1977-1983, and chaired a Council for the Arts. Administrative records relating to these structures and reports on how to structure and fund arts are scattered throughout the series. The remainder of the series relates to specific projects such as the Art Gallery creation, Carillon Tower, Centennial Sculpture, Festival of the Arts, and Sculpture in the Environment series.

The final series contains a mixture of personal/scholarly interests and other Ferris projects which did not pertain to the arts. It has a series of memorandum and correspondence which did not fit completely into either of the first two series. There are also records relating to the Mecosta County United fund.

Part of Dachoff's interest in cultural activities was a natural outgrowth of his music involvement. For example, Dachoff also was extremely involved with the General Education Convocation Council which was a committee utilized college funds to bring in speakers, acts and films to educate students. It was the predecessor of the Arts and Lectures committee and many of the groups were musical. These records are held in a separate collection, as are records relating to Dachoff's leadership role in the Omicron Delta Kappa society.

Under Dachoff, the arts flourished. The music program grew in faculty numbers, bands, and classes. Art was added to campus in the form of sculptures and an art gallery. Finally, the Festival of the Arts program became an annual staple to the campus and community.

Arrangement Note

The Dacho Dachoff Papers are arranged into three series: 1. Music program, 2. Arts on Campus and 3. Professional Activities.
