A Finding Aid for the Academic Program Review Council Records UA 31.4.10

Collection Summary

Historical Note

Following the creation of the Faculty Senate in 1987, a formal review process was created for academic programs. In the document creating the process the mission was defined as "to insure that the academic programs of the University achieve and maintain the highest possible standards of academic excellence. The first manual began a review process by the Academic Senate in July 1988.

At Ferris State University, program review is a faculty-led process conducted with administrative input and support. The Academic Program Review Council is comprised of representatives from all colleges and other support services. It is chaired by a faculty member and only faculty members have voting privileges. It fulfills one of the criteria that the University must meet for regional accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association (NCA). Council members review programs on a cyclical basis and create/revise the manual for program review, including process changes on an annual basis.

Academic program review at Ferris functions effectively through the collaboration of faculty and administration. Degree program self-study reports are researched and written by faculty-led teams, and reviewed by an all-faculty committee, the Academic Program Review Council (APRC). Their recommendations go next to the Academic Senate, of which APRC is a standing committee. They then go to the Provost, the University President, and Board of Trustees for action.

Scope and Content Note

The Academic Program Review Council serves as a committee of Faculty Senate and is comprised of faculty members. They advise the Provost on evaluation and review of existing programs. It has been in existence since 1988 and has had a variety of requirements for evaluation as detailed in versions of the Academic Program Review Manual. Each change to the manual has been endorsed by the Faculty Senate.

The majority of the collection consists of the program review documents submitted to the committee. Information includes mission, assessment, surveys and descriptions of program content. The seonc series includes other materials such as the correspondence of chairs, program evaluation plans and the recommendations of the committee along with the official response of Academic Affairs. Other materials relating to Academic Program Review can also be found in the Academic Senate Records.

This collection is arranged into two series: 1. Academic Program Review Reports and 2. Committee Records.
