Social Work: Now More Than Ever

Welcome to the Ferris State University B.S.W. Program! The Ferris State University Social Work Program is well known in the academic world as a producer of skilled social workers from an advanced curriculum. The faculty members come from various backgrounds in the varying field of social work.

The B.S.W. program at Ferris has been accredited since 1989 by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Since achieving accreditation, the Social Work program has continued to provide an important and rich academic opportunity at Ferris.

The B.S.W. program at Ferris covers the vast continuum of social work areas, including child welfare, gerontology, working with people living with disabilities and mental health, and research to name a few. Students are involved with community agencies and programs throughout the social work curriculum.

What Will I Study?

The social work program curriculum consists of four major areas: Human Behavior in the Social Environment (studying people in the context of their environment), Social Work Research, Social Work Practice and Social Welfare Policy.

The program has two field experiences: The introductory field experience, typically taken the summer between the student's freshman and sophomore years, and the senior field experience, taken in the last semesters of the student's academic career. The first experience is designed for the students to get their "feet wet" in the field of human services. In their senior internship, students will actually be practicing social work under the supervision of a social worker.

Throughout the curriculum, students will have several opportunities to interface with the community through academic service learning. Examples are hanging out with elementary school children in the lunch buddy program or mentoring middle school students in the mentoring program. These are designed to give the students experience with different populations as well as benefiting the community.

The program also has a study away course in El Salvador each spring.
