Accommodation Appeal Process

Students with grievances relating to accommodations should first work through the concern relating to disability accommodation within the Educational Counseling and Disabilities Services by discussing the concern with the Counselor of record (231.591.3057 or [email protected]). If that effort is not satisfactory please submit the request for reconsideration in the form of a detailed written complaint sent to:

Julie Alexander, MA, LPC
Director of Accessibility and Disability Services
Ferris State University
180 Campus Drive
1017 Arts, Sciences and Education Commons
Big Rapids, MI 49307
[email protected]

The grievance should include the following

  • A clear and concise statement of the problem or issues to be reviewed and a summary of steps taken, if any, by the student to resolve the problem or issues prior to the filing.
  • A reasonably detailed description of the relevant facts, including the student’s alleged disability, names of persons with information, and a description or copies of relevant documents or other evidence relevant to the grievance. A chronology of events is appreciated.
  • The name, contact information and signature of the person initiating the complaint. Electronic signatures are acceptable.

Request for reconsideration under this policy must be filed within 10 days of the denial/disagreement of accommodation request. Ferris State University may extend this time frame where a delay is due to circumstances beyond a student’s control such as illness or incapacity.

If this effort is not satisfactory, the student should submit a written complaint to
