Dr. Richard C. Manor was a professor of Dental Laboratory Technology of the College of Allied Health at Ferris State University from 1965 to 1979. He attended the University of Detroit and graduated from the Kerpel School of Dental Technology. In the letter to the Board about his hiring, President Victor Spathelf, notes that he was a rare combination of a lab technician who also had formal schooling. Prior to his hire, he had also worked for twelve years in the Army as a dental laboratory technician. Manor went on to lead the Dental Technology programs at Ferris and help to further professionalize the field- leading to many more dental technicians who had that critical combination of formal training and practical experience.
Manor had a strong interest in the instrumentation and creation of molds. In addition to his work with the American Dental Association, he holds a patent on a simulated dentition tool (US 3780439).
Debra Manor Cox was the daughter of Richard and a dental student at Ferris State University in the 1980s. Some of the materials in the collection were used by her as part of her coursework. She later returned to Ferris State University as department head of the Education and Career Counseling Center and is a licensed professional counselor.
The Manor Family Collection provides a window into the types of activities and resources used by the Dental Technology program during the 1970s and 1980s. The collection is basically divided into two sections: dental technology resources and artifacts. The collection contains dental technology books, brochures, and manuals as well as miscellaneous dental artifacts used by Dr. Manor in his field. A second possible name for the second series rather than artifacts would be dental instruments, for that is what much of the collection contains. At that time the technology programs included the making of molds and false teeth. Manor was an instructor in this area. Box 3 contains an original box of student tools used by his daughter in the program in the 1980s.
This collection consists of two series: 1. Dental Care Resources and 2. Artifacts.
