Risk Management and Insurance Programs Potential Uses for Gifted Funds

Prospective donors may be curious about how their gifts to the Ferris State University Risk Management and Insurance Program might be used. It is well within the rights of donors to designate their gifts for particular purposes that generally fall into two categories:

  • Student Scholarships
  • General Program Activities

While gifts of all kinds are appreciated, the non-specific nature of “General Program Activities” may lead to a lack of understanding and a reduced level of giving to that very important purpose. The intent of this page is to briefly describe a few examples of how funds designated for “General Program Activities” may be used to further the Program, its students, and its outcomes.

Experiential Learning Opportunities

Funds may be used to allow students to travel and attend various risk and insurance conferences, meetings, and field trips. The purpose of such experiential learning excursions is to immerse students in the industry so that they may learn and build networks beyond the classroom. In the past, these resources have permitted Ferris students to attend the Risk and Insurance Management Society Annual Conference, Michigan Association of Insurance Agents convention, Gamma Iota Sigma International Conference, and field trips to insurance agencies and companies.

Acquire Learning Resources

Subscriptions to or purchases of industry-specific resources, as well as acquisition of learning tools such as software and simulations.

Program Promotion

Students benefit from the synergy that results from an increasing population of colleagues who accompany them on the same learning journey. Therefore, it is beneficial to use resources to enhance the synergistic opportunity. Promotion of the Program also enhances the prestige and recognition attached to the Ferris State Risk Management and Insurance degree which benefits current students and alumni.

This is not an exhaustive list but rather an example of a few common uses of donor funds. Each of the above purposes have direct positive impacts on the students who are studying risk management and insurance at Ferris State University, and enhances their employability within the industry after graduation.
