Biographical/Historical Note

Robert L. Ewigleben was born in 1928 in Michigan. He worked as a machine operator in Lansing to pay for his education. He received three degrees from Michigan State University: a bachelors in Biology (1952), a masters in educational administration (1956) and a Ph.D. in educational administration (1969).

Ewigleben began his career in the public schools of Croswell, Michigan serving as a chemistry and mathematics teacher. After serving as a principal and superintendent, he moved to Indianapolis, Indiana as the assistant director of the Purdue University regional campus in Indianapolis. In 1962, Ewigleben was appointed the director of the Purdue University regional center in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Ewigleben also held positions as a vice-president of Administrative Affairs at Humboldt University and as president of the College of San Mateo, California. The College of San Mateo was one of the largest community college systems at the time.

Robert Ewigleben came to Ferris State College in March 1971 and stayed until his retirement in 1984. His accomplishments included significant increases in the curriculum including the creation of such unique programs as the professional golf management major, the creation of the Michigan College of Optometry, and the creation of the Manufacturing Resource and Production Center in Grand Rapids. He also oversaw an large increase in the buildings on the campus including the Ewigleben Sports Complex and the creation of the hockey team. Also during this period athletics joined the NCAA in the division II category.

Scope and Contents Note

Robert Ewigleben, the twelfth president of Ferris, led the school both through a period of growth and of state restrictions. During his tenure, the administrative control of the institution was largely decentralized and that can be reflected in the materials not found in his collection that may have been in the papers of earlier presidents.

The president's records provide documentation of issues which were handled by the presidents office directly. This series does not contained detailed information about the activities of the various units, or minutes of their meetings. Certain items were of great interest to President Ewigleben and those materials feature prominently in the papers. Ewigleben was a strong supporter of athletics, building both a hockey team and an arena. He also oversaw the transition of Ferris sports to becoming a part of NCAA Division 2. Additionally, Ewigleben saw the creation of the College of Optometry despite opposition from Governor Miliken. Also of great importance to the college was the relationship with the state. In additional to legislative liaison files found in the subjects series, files relating to his assistant who dealt primarily with legislative issues (Leon Keyes followed by George Holcomb) are found within the Office Files series.

Material relating to Ewigleben's organizational interests may also be found in the collection. He was an active participant in the American Council on Education and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. Ewigleben also became involved in local organizations such as the state Chamber of Commerce and the local Republican party.

The papers are divided into three series: 1. Office Files, 2. Subject Files and 3.Communications. Many subjects show up in multiple points within the collection. The largest, most comprehensive series is the Office Files. The subject files are limited to a few topics which were filed separately from the office files.

Arrangement Note

This collection is arranged into a three series: 1. Office Files, 2. Subject Files and 3. Communications Records.
