Historical Note

The American Association of University Women was founded in January 1882 by 65 women college graduates living in Boston, Massachusetts. Local chapters began to form by 1882. The vision of the AAUW is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education and research.

In 1946, the Big Rapids, Michigan chapter was established. Many of the leaders of the organization worked at Ferris Institute. The chapter is still in existence today.

Scope and Content Note

The Community Survey on Women Power is a snapshot of women in Big Rapids, Michigan, in 1954. The survey provides individual answers to question, as well as a compilation of answers to questions about educational levels, work experience, community experience, hobbies and interests in adult education courses. This collection only contains the project by the AAUW chapter and does not contain any administrative records such as minutes, membership lists, etc.

Provenance (Acquisition Information)

These records were transferred to the University Archives at some point prior to October 2002. There is no documentation of the transfer of the records.

Processing Information

The American Association of University Women Big Rapids Branch Records were processed to the folder level by Lindsay Stevenson in December 2008. A finding aid was prepared in a word processing format and converted to EAD 2.0. A collection level MARC-21 record was prepared and placed in the library online public access catalog.
