Historical Note

In 1894, Woodbridge Ferris received from J. Stearns, the Secretary of State the incorporation papers for Ferris Industrial School of Big Rapids, Michigan. The school had already been operational since 1884. 1894 however, marked the beginning of the school in many ways- with the completion of the first permanent building on the campus of Old Main, and the first official publication of the school catalog. The five original trustees were all college employees: Woodbridge N. Ferris, Nellie G. Ferris, William D. Henderson, Frank Byam and Anna Pease.

In 1900, the name changed to Ferris Institute and the articles of association were amended. Woodbridge Ferris retained a tight control over the institution before his death, despite a board of trustees and his frequent absences. Further amendments were made to the corporation's charter in 1923 and 1927. By 1931, Ferris was gone and the Institute had a large debt. The trustees "sold" their stock to a group of approximately 40 local businessmen who wanted to create a non-profit, non-stock organization. They were called the "Board of Incorporators." On their board of trustees were: Roy Buck, Arthur J. Butler, William C. Taggart, George F. Fairman, Ray H. Waters, James B. Campbell, Willis C. Judson and William F. Turner. The depression and war years were ones of continual financial hardship for the institution- at one point in 1945, they almost sold the school to the Mennonite Church. They ran the school until it was accepted as a gift by the State of Michigan.

On 1 July 1950, Ferris officially became a state college. The original Board of Control appointed by Governor Williams were: Judge Raymond Starr (Chairman), Charles Fairman, Bess Fishman, Judge William J. Miller, Russel B. Nye, Lawrence Prakken, Roy C. Vandercook, and Eugene Ward. The President of the institution was an ex-officio member. Members served staggered eight year terms and meet monthly.

In 1963, the Ferris Institute underwent a name change by a legislative act to Ferris State College. In 1987, the school became Ferris State University. In the mid-1990s the Board of Control changed its name to become the Board of Trustees.

Scope and Content Note

The Board of Trustees of Ferris State University (formerly known as the Board of Incorporators and the Board of Control) are appointed by the Governor of the State of Michigan to govern the university. This gives them a wide range of both interests and authority. Certain items are found throughout the records as consistent issues for the Board including enrollment figures, approval of programs and building projects and personnel issues including appointments, leaves of absence and retirements. At other times, a specific issue such as conversion to semesters or accreditation process becomes a topic for the board. At such times they may formulate an outside committee and generate a report, or a policy. Once the policy has been generated or the issue dealt with in some fashion, the Board will move on to other topics. Because of this pattern of activity it is difficult to characterize all the topics covered within the series.

Individual trustee papers are processed as separate collections.

Provenance (Acquisition Information)

The Board of Trustees Records were donated by the secretary of the board and the President's Office in ongoing increments between 1982 and the present.

Processing Information

The Board of Trustee Records were initially processed to the folder level by Melinda McMartin Isler in August 2003. A finding aid was prepared in a word processing format and converted to EAD1.0. A revised finding aid was created January 2008. A collection level MARC-format record was prepared and placed in the library online public access catalog. Description was based on Describing Archives: A Content Standard (Chicago: Society of American Archivists, 2004).

Separated Materials

During processing, duplicate materials were discarded. There were no other materials placed in other collections.

Technical Requirements

This collection consists of primarily of paper based materials. For the 1987 evaluation, a 5.25 inch diskette has been created containing committee reports. For access to this disk, please contact the University Archivist.

In this series are copies of laws/charters pertaining to the governing of Ferris. Also in this series are pamphlets giving information about various board members and the bylaws and mission as defined by the Board. Of interest is a series of group of files relating to the transfer of Ferris Institute from a private corporation to a state institution in 1950.

This series is mostly approved copies of contracts, although one folder contains a working copy of a Ferris Faculty Association contract from the 1996 negotiations.
