The Medical and Surgical Service uses the latest, cutting edge high-tech equipment and technology to evaluate and manage patients with glaucoma, diabetes, cataracts, age-related problems such as macular degeneration and dry eye as well as other vision threatening abnormalities.
Dr. Barrett performs minor surgical procedures for common eye problems such as a chalazion, skin tags (growths) growing around the eyes and permanent removal of misdirected eyelashes are performed in the clinic. Other surgery, such as eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) and cataract surgery, is performed in a state-of-the-art surgery center specially equipped for eye surgery of all types. The preoperative evaluation and post-operative care is performed here at the College.
If a patient requires a referral to another health care provider such as a retinal specialist, neurologist, internist, etc., the doctors will fully explain the condition and alternatives for treatment and make arrangements for the referral.
Laser surgery ( LASIK, PRK) for nearsightedness (Myopia), farsightedness (Hyperopia), and astigmatism is also available for our patients from our surgeon, Dr. Barrett. Dr. Barrett has performed well over 7000 laser surgeries since 1998. He is one of the leading refractive surgery specialists in West Michigan. A 30 minute no cost laser screening is offered to anyone who is interested in reducing or eliminating their need to wear glasses. Many sports enthusiasts who enjoy hunting, golfing, tennis, softball, baseball and many other sporting activities enjoy the freedom of not having to wear glasses full-time. Unfortunately, laser surgery does not help patients who simply need “reading glasses”.
