Glaucoma is a chronic eye disease that gradually steals sight without warning and many times without symptoms. This vision loss is caused by damage to the optic nerve. The optic nerve acts like an electric cable with over a million wires and is responsible for carrying the images we see to the brain. The patient may have an increase in their intraocular pressure (IOP) or it may be normal.
Since glaucoma is a chronic disease, it must be treated for life. Currently there is no cure for glaucoma, but research makes us hopeful for a cure. Research deals with origins and pathology of glaucoma, as well as opposed to managing symptoms. Importantly, glaucoma can usually be identified and stopped before significant vision loss occurs. This is why an annual vision exam by your eye care professional is important.
