OSM Alumni Spotlight: Benjamin Metzgar

OSM Alumni Spotlight: Benjamin Metzgar – B.S. Operations and Supply Management, 2017

                                                                 Benjamin Metzgar

Benjamin is a 2017 Operations and Supply Management Graduate and currently works as an industrial engineer for Yanfeng Automotive Interiors! In regard to the OSM curriculum he writes, "Looking back to when I entered the professional workplace setting, having gone through the OSM / lean curriculum allowed me to start my first job with a great understanding of manufacturing and how a facility would like to run its operations. The small details and some metrics may be different from one company to another or even from one facility to the next within an organization, but the foundation of operations and the desire to drive for the highest possible efficiency is always a common factor. The OSM program geared me for success by exposing me to a lot of tools that are used for driving operational efficiency such as the PFEP, PDCA, Kanban and various Problem Solving methods. Ferris State was able to give me an understanding of these tools and allow me to jump into the job with knowledge of the industry and operations on day one." This is incredible feedback. We are excited that your studies at Ferris allowed you to excel in the workplace! Regarding advice, Benjamin notes that it is important to, "Take the time to really understand the tools such as PDCA and the PFEP and how they are used by a manufacturing facility to drive an efficient operation. These are both incredibly powerful tools and will likely become a part of your daily life – the industry will not matter. Project Management and Change Management are also incredible skill sets to have and will allow anyone to have success early on. Learning to coordinate several departments or manage cross-functional teams is key for project success and will quickly gain you respect within the workplace."

Thank you for such valuable advice, Benjamin! We are ecstatic to have you in our alumni community and on our OSM advisory board!
