Information for International Students
Ferris has a diverse population of student employees. Many of our students are International students from around the world. There are several employment issues that are unique to International students. International students should note several rules and regulations in the Student Employment Handbook. Some of the most notable differences are that International students are limited to working a maximum of 20 hours per week during fall and spring semesters. International students must be enrolled full time to meet eligibility requirements. Full time for undergraduate students is 12 credits and 9 for graduate students. Please refer to the Job Search Overview for details on how to find a job on campus.
International students have forms to complete that are unique to them. The W-4 form which is used to determine the number of allowances you are claiming for local, state and federal income tax must be completed differently than US citizens. Supplemental Form W4 Instructions for Nonresident Aliens.
International student employees working prior to receiving Social Security Card
If students are already in possession of their Social Security card then they may be hired the same as U.S citizens. If they do not yet have their Social Security card they should contact the Student Employment Office or Office of International Education for more information.
