An annual pelvic and breast exam is recommended for all females 21 years of age and
older (American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology). A PAP smear is recommended
every 3 years, starting at age 21. The purpose of the PAP smear is to detect cancerous
or precancerous changes of the cervix caused by HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) infection.
It is important to avoid intercourse, douching or insertion of vaginal creams for
24-48 hours prior to your exam to ensure a good PAP specimen. During the annual exam
your height, weight, blood pressure, and full body physical are performed. This service
is by appointment only.
Confidential assessment and testing for sexually transmitted diseases and other vaginal
or urinary infections is offered. We provide prompt medical treatment and follow-up
care as needed.
We also treat issues with menstrual cycles (too frequent, too heavy, overly painful).
A full intake and history are done and individualized treatment can often be started
the same day.
Women desiring prescription contraceptives should make an appointment. Before receiving
a prescription, you will receive instruction on various contraceptive methods. After
a thorough discussion and evaluation, the women's health nurse practitioner will talk
to you about which contraceptive is best (i.e. IUD, Subdermal Implant, birth control
pills, patch, vaginal ring, DEPO-PROVERA shot or condoms). At this appointment you
may also have a full physical including pap smear, breast exam and pelvic exam if
appropriate.
