As the health care industry continues to grow and expand, the demand for skilled health care managers also increases. Employment is expected to grow faster than average with the fastest growth in home health agencies, residential care facilities and practitioners' offices and clinics. This program has been designed in two formats, one for students who enter the program either as freshmen or who transfer into the program after having completed an associate degree and the second for students who wish to complete a bachelor's degree while waiting to enter an associate degree program.
The course work, which includes courses in management, accounting, quality improvement, health care finance, project planning, supervision, and long-term care management prepares you to work in many health care settings. Graduates are able to enter graduate school to earn a master's degree.
The Health Care Systems Administration program is also available in Grand Rapids, where the professional courses are offered in the evenings. General education requirements may be taken at a local college or university and transferred to fulfill Ferris graduation requirements. A minimum of 30 semester credit hours must be earned at Ferris in order for the degree to be granted
Students can earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Care Systems Administration prior to, at the same time as, or after earning a degree in one of the clinical programs (Respiratory Care, Radiography, Sonography, Nuclear Medicine, Nursing, Clinical Lab Sciences, and Dental Hygiene).
The program offers two concentration options: A general HCSA concentration which prepares the student to work in any are of healthcare administration; a Long Term Care concentration which provides a focus on working with special populations, specifically those residing in long term care facilities. Students will be prepared to sit for long term care administration certification with successful completion of this concentration.
Program minor options are available to students wishing to attain in-depth knowledge and skill in a specific area. Minor options include, but are not limited to Human Resource Management.
Program courses are taught on the Big Rapids campus, online, and evenings in Grand Rapids. Two internships are required – a six week internship in a hospital setting and a ten week internship during the last semester.
