Biography

Dr. Eklin is a professor of criminal justice at Ferris State University. Prior to becoming an academic, he worked for the Michigan Department of Corrections for over 20 years in various capacities ranging from corrections officer to administration. Dr. Eklin has experience working with incarcerated individuals at all security levels including male, female, and youthful offenders. He is experienced in the care, custody, and control of inmates and often testifies as an expert witness in state and federal civil litigation cases.

From 2008 to 2016, Dr. Eklin served on the Michigan Correctional Officers’ Training Council. The Honorable Governor Jennifer M. Granholm appointed him to the Council and the Honorable Rick Snyder, reappointed him for an additional term. Dr. Eklin served has chair or vice-chair for most of his tenure. The Council is tasked with approving the training standards for all State of Michigan correctional officers and sergeants.

Dr. Eklin teaches several undergraduate courses related to the corrections system with a focus on social justice. He also instructs graduate courses in organizational leadership and qualitative research methodology.
