Biography

Background: I started my academic career at St. Clair County Community College and then transferred to Michigan State University to earn secondary teacher education certification. Next, I taught high school and returned to Michigan State University to accept a position as a Teacher In-service Coordinator focusing on technical skill development for Michigan’s Career and Technical Education Teachers. These experiences led me to pursue a Ph.D. at Ohio State University. Upon completion I accepted a position as an adjunct faculty at the University of Michigan – Flint campus. This position afforded the opportunity to work in teacher education placing pre-service teacher candidates in challenging urban school settings and monitoring their progress and development. From this position, I migrated into a full-time faculty / administrator position at Mott Community College. In this position, I developed a new Para Educator program and teacher education transfer courses requiring students to obtain early classroom experiences with the aim of transferring community college courses directly into four-year teacher certification programs. Supportive activities included the development of Teacher Expos and a Future Educator’s Club. Additionally, I was involved with creating transfer agreements between the Mott Community College and many of Michigan’s major teacher certification institutions. Currently, I am a tenured Professor in the School of Education at Ferris State University. The institution offers associate through doctorate degrees. This position is unique in that it is physically housed at Mott Community College with the mission of serving community college students that aim to become teachers. I assist with student advising, classroom instruction and field placement and observation at the community college. I have been involved in many aspects of educator preparation including the recruitment and retention of a cohort of African American male teachers. My main strength comes from working with non-traditional students having started my academic career at St. Clair County Community College and being a first-generation student. I believe that every student has a unique story and set of challenges and as a result, I enjoy finding solutions to the unique problems and obstacles that arise.
