Pat on the Back Awards 2020-21

The Ferris State University Pride Committee continues to recognize and reward the small ways that we show our Ferris Pride. The Pat-on-the-Back Award is a quick, easy, fun way to let someone know that they did a good thing and someone noticed.

This award is an easy and excellent way to thank a Ferris employee or student for exhibiting pride and doing something good for others through their actions.

To nominate someone, email [email protected] with your name and address, the nominee's name and address, and the reason you have chosen this faculty, staff or student for a Pat-on-the-Back Award.

Thank you for the great participation for this fun and important award.

Awardees for May 2021

Congratulations to the following individuals/departments for receiving Pat-on-the-Back recognition for May 2021. Each candidate or office will receive a Pat-on-the-Back Award certificate.

I would like to nominate Dale Skornia for his years of hard work. Through Pep Band and Symphony, he has worked hard to mold his musicians into good people and help them create beautiful music. As a member of those bands, he worked to make sure we represented the University well. I think the founder and his wife would be proud to have Skornia continuing the music legacy, as Mrs. Ferris was the FSU's first music teacher. Skornia also spent many nights at games and on trips to guide Ferris State's pep band in cheering on our winning teams. Going to Texas with Dale and the band was one of my favorite experiences as a Bulldog and throughout COVID I have truly missed the music program. The music program at Ferris has always been welcoming and I loved my courses and organizations including Skornia.

I would like to nominate Jamie Franklin for the Pat-on-the-Back, he is very dedicated to his team and residents. I have observed him making his best effort to help not only his team, but his residents be successful. When I personally faced the loss of my younger brother and other family members during COVID he was there for me. Jamie made sure my shifts had coverage so I could focus on my family. Additionally, he and his family support all communities on campus and show their Ferris Pride! I am grateful for having the privilege to work with such a great human.

I would like to nominate Ashlee Mishler, EIO Marketing Manager, for her amazing work putting together helpful how-to-videos for students on our Resource page as well as helpful how-to-videos for advisors. Her work is perfection and so helpful.

I would like to nominate Carla Kleinheksel for a Pat on the Back Award. She went above and beyond to help me with an issue that effected my pay even though it didn’t originate with her department. She called every day and updated me and her kindness made all the difference with my experience. \

I would like to nominate Jason Swearingen and Wes Thompson and their Crew for going above and beyond to help make the Pharmacy Virtual Hooding a huge success for our students, administration and staff. They helped us liven up a virtual hooding and brought smiles to everyone involved. We could not have done what we did without their excellent help. Thank you both for all you do, it is greatly appreciated. Jason Swearingen has also been helping us for the last four years complete the Annual Pharmacy Spring Seminar and that is another event that his expertise shines through. He has helped us improve this event in so many ways. We could never pull this event off and get so many alumni continuing education without his wonderful help. Thanks again for all you do for the College of Pharmacy and the University.

Pat-on-the-Back Awards are given monthly. If there is someone you would like to nominate, please send your request to [email protected].

Awardees for April 2021

Congratulations to the following individuals/departments for receiving Pat-on-the-Back recognition for April 2021. Each candidate or office will receive a Pat-on-the-Back Award certificate.

I would like to nominate Jennifer Johnson for coming up with creative ways to reach out to current and prospective students. She continually assesses and adjusts messaging and outreach based on student feedback and is a huge asset to the College of Arts, Sciences and Education.

I would like to nominate Sheri Edstrom and Jocelyn Goheen for the Pat-on-the-Back Award because they are both always so willing to step in to help and go the extra mile whenever someone needs extra support. They both always do so with a smile on their face and they serve the students to the best of their ability. I am so thankful to have them as colleagues. Thank you, Sheri and Jocelyn, for providing extra support when I needed it and for serving our students so well! You are so appreciated.

Pat-on-the-Back Awards are given monthly. If there is someone you would like to nominate, please send your request to [email protected].

Awardees for March 2021

Congratulations to the following individuals/departments for receiving Pat-on-the-Back recognition for March 2021. Each candidate or office will receive a Pat-on-the-Back Award certificate.

I would like to nominate
Leslie Sukup for a Pat-on-the-Back Award. This professor goes above and beyond, and is always there to help guide Ferris students on their paths to success. She is involved in multiple extra-curricular activities, including advising the Business Professionals of America RSO, organizing the advisory board for the Business Administration program, and advising the student team involved with the ACG Cup competition. She is an outstanding staff member of Ferris State University. We are so lucky to have someone always willing to step up and get involved in different opportunities for students.

I want to nominate Jean Inabinett for a Pat-on-the-Back Award. I struggled fall semester to balance my classes with my job. I had trouble with professors who could not provide an online classroom experience that a student could thrive in. Entering this spring semester, I was nervous about having my first accounting class since high school. For reference, I am now a senior at FSU. Jean Inabinett is an exceptional professor within the accounting department. She not only teaches in a completely online environment without overwhelming her busy students but is also able to understand the needs of finance majors in an accounting class. I will never love accounting, but I can’t help but love Professor Inabinett’s class.

Gary Green and the Public Safety Staff deserve a Pat-on-the-Back Award for going above and beyond in helping with the Taste of Spring Break Food Truck event. He did a walk-through of the parking lot, listened to our needs, and had his staff block the area off that was needed. He did this with a positive, can-do attitude. It’s nice to know that our Public Safety team is here to keep us safe and here to help us have fun now and then. Thank you!

Katie Thomas and the CLACS Staff deserve a Pat-on-the-Back Award for all their Frozen Tropics Spring Break events. Katie stands out because she did the planning and decorating of the office, and it was AWESOME! Thanks for the great activities – I know the students appreciated them.

I’d like to nominate Leanna Kwilos for going above and beyond on a Saturday morning to help me find my phone. Customer service is so important, and the David L. Eisler Center should be proud to have employees like her. Thank you, Leanna! (No, we didn’t find the phone, but she tried REALLY hard.)

Becky Walsh-Zimmerman, IT Asset Specialist, is AWESOME! She takes time to clarify orders, works hard with us to explain processes, and always makes you feel that you are her only customer for the day. Her competence is impeccable and this IS what Ferris Pride is and I am so happy to have any interaction with her. She is a bright spot to my day 😊 Thank you for sharing your sunshine, Becky!

I would like to give April Bigelow a Pat-on-the-Back Award. She is amazing to work with. Always has a positive attitude. April is an expert at excel spreadsheets. She can throw together reports in minutes. I completely appreciate everything she does for me.

Pat-on-the-Back Awards are given monthly. If there is someone you would like to nominate, please send your request to [email protected].

Awardees for February 2021

Congratulations to the following individuals/departments for receiving Pat-on-the-Back recognition for February 2021. Each candidate or office will receive a Pat-on-the-Back Award certificate.

I would like to nominate Lori Griffith and Melanie Mulder in Financial Aid for a Pat-on-the Back award. Both of these ladies are so helpful they will go up and beyond to help me as well as the student. Whether it’s via phone, email or teams, they will always respond very quickly no matter how many times I bother them and they will do whatever is needed. I cannot thank them enough for all the assistance they provide me. You ladies are truly an asset to this University.

I would like to nominate Christine Hilla, in the College of Business Dean’s Office, for a Pat-on-the-Back Award. Christine is always willing to go above and beyond to make sure students, faculty, staff and visitors to the College of Business and the Dean’s Office receive the best service they can. She is always willing to jump in and help others with anything they may need help with and she always does it with a smile (even behind the mask) and a great attitude. I personally appreciate all of the tasks she has offered to help me with so that I am able to work on other more pressing tasks. Thank you, Christine for all you do.

I would like to nominate Dawn Taylor: Dawn has done an amazing job with the multitude of requests that have been asked of her. She is never one to back down and gets things done in a timely manner. I appreciate her dedication to Enrollment Services and to her team within the office. She is a problem solver, has great work ethic and has helped make projects come together. Dawn you are the backbone to many projects and it is observed and recognized. I appreciate you for being more than a nice co-worker, you are an incredible professional in the higher education industry.

When we unexpectedly had to close the KCAD Library at the beginning of the Spring 2021 semester, Jason Bentley and Mari Kermit stepped up to assist and provide coverage so that we were able to reopen the library and serve our students. This innovative, collaborative solution between the FLITE staff to support the KCAD Library is above and beyond and we are thankful. #ferrisforward

I want to nominate Patricia Constantine, former program chair of medical illustration and illustration professor at Kendall College of Art and Design. Patti has been indefatigable with all of my questions and has made herself available at all times of day fielding calls and emails as I enter the role of program chair. Patti continues to provide excellent advice and guidance as I find my way at Ferris and KCAD. She has gone way above and beyond helping with curriculum and advising questions, which are especially complicated as the program integrates three different institutions. Thank you.

The Charter Schools Office would like to nominate Marie Delamater, Disbursements manager, for a Pat-on-the-Back Award. Marie’s extra effort and expertise in facilitating an intricate financial transaction between FSU, the Michigan Department of Education, and an FSU-authorized academy ensured continuity in school operations. Thanks, Marie.

I would like to nominate Amber Snow for a Pat-on-the-Back award. Amber was quick to discover that a disruption to service with an outside software vendor had occurred. Before any complaints were made by users, she notified myself of the error and contacted the vendor directly who then provided the new code. Amber’s attention to detail and oversight of our system is GREATLY appreciated – she was able to get this issue resolved seamlessly. Thank you Amber.

Awardees for January 2021

Congratulations to the following individuals/departments for receiving Pat-on-the-Back recognition for January 2021. Each candidate or office will receive a Pat-on-the-Back Award certificate.

I would like nominate Arielle Miller in Enrollment Services for a Pat-on-the-Back. Arielle is professional and supportive on multiple initiatives. She goes above and beyond her day to day tasks. Her dedication to her work is stellar and I am grateful that she is a part of our campus community.

I would like to nominate Danette Mondrella for her hard work and dedication. She is a vital role in the University’s curriculum process. I truly admire her attention-to-detail and ability to stay organized during even the busiest times in curriculum. Thank you so much Danette for all you do.

I would like to nominate Darnell Lewis and his staff for the excellent MLK Jr. programming this past month. Their events added substance to the TWO THOUSAND TWENTY ONE-DERFUL WAYS TO BE A BULLDOG Spring Welcome. Great job, Darnell. Thank you.

Debra Warick has worked at FSU for over 15 years. Deb has been a loving and caring employee/parent to many of our students going through the teacher education program. In the last five years, she took over the responsibility of coordinating the School of Education Field Placement Office. In the past year, she has done double-duty supporting our students and arranging field placements in school systems across the state. Deb needed to reschedule field placements due to COVID-19 with school districts that canceled prior arrangements. These cancelations would require Deb to reinvest time and energy in arranging new field placements with other schools. During the spring and fall semesters, this happened multiple times, resulting in increased stress and workload for Deb and our students.

During this chaos, Deb would visit K-12 schools with fresh donuts for the teachers and principals, acting as a goodwill ambassador for Ferris State University and our students. She talked with students on weekends, helping them deal with procedural issues, encouraging them through various personal and professional difficulties. She celebrated their successes as they pass the MTTC Exams and comforts them when they do not.

One day, a fellow employee heard Deb screaming in her cubicle. Thinking something terrible had happened, she discovered Deb was celebrating a student's successful passing an examination. These responses define Deb.

She will be retiring soon, and we genuinely miss her and all the support she has provided for our students, K-12 future teachers, and the School of Education. She truly deserves a Ferris State University Pat-on-Back Award.

Awardees for December 2020

Congratulations to the following individuals/departments for receiving Pat-on-the-Back recognition for December 2020. Each candidate or office will receive a Pat-on-the-Back Award certificate.

I would like to nominate Bridget Olson for a Pat-on-the-Back.  Recently, Bridget assisted several off-campus students, and was patient and explained the steps students needed to take. Thank you, Bridget, for your dedication to student service!

I would like to nominate the Extended and International Operations Marketing Team for a Pat-on-the-Back award. This team consists of Jennifer Amlotte, Michelle Selimi, Ashlee Mishler and Hannah Wieters. Many of the items I requested their help with weren’t necessarily part of their original workload for the year and some were on very tight deadlines. Thanks to this team for their professionalism and the wonderful caliber of work that they turn out.

I would like to nominate Holly Williams from HR for a Pat-on-the-Back Award.  My son had to have emergency surgery in another state.  I got initial correspondence from the hospital that the insurance wouldn’t cover it.  It ended up being a misunderstanding that Holly helped me work through. I appreciate her prompt attention to this matter. She kept me posted through the whole process and reassured me that all would be well in the world.  Thanks for your compassion, Holly.

I would like to nominate our student assistant McKenna Carlson for a Pat-On-The-Back award. This past week we had to send over 80 unique emails to faculty and staff that she had to create and double-check for accuracy. She literally works in three distinctly separate areas of Extended and International Operations and is able to keep everything straight.  Most of the time she is two steps ahead and has amazing initiative.  Thanks for all you do.

I nominate Dr. Nathan Nelson in the English Department. He has gone out of his way to connect to students with compassion. He supported students academically and interpersonally during this time of COVID.

Please recognize Bob Cardana, Williams Auditorium manager, for being so helpful in making this fall’s student in-person classes successful. He goes out of his way to make sure the College of Pharmacy’s students are taken care of, even to the point of providing a sugar boost when needed. It is encouraging to know that we have employees with a servant’s heart who are in day in and day out making Ferris work.

I would like to nominate Sandy Stoddard, administrative specialist, in the Office of Transfer and Secondary School Partnerships, for a Pat-on-the-Back Award.  Together, we completed seven articulation agreements in less than a year, and most of them in just the last six months. I know Sandy has a lot on her plate but she was always timely in making updates and following up with the partner institutions on the status of agreements. These agreements take a high degree of attention to detail and background knowledge. Sandy was very thorough, responsive and easy to work with.

I would like to give Fredericka Hayes, Holly Williams, Jennifer Saladin, and Jennifer Kailing Wallace from Human Resources a Pat-on-the-Back for the extra time and effort they have put in since COVID began in March. They have went above and beyond what is expected of them to ensure people get what they need during this difficult time. It hasn't been easy, especially with all the extra work, system changeover, and changeover of HR personnel. This group has grit.

The Payroll – Disbursements Office would like to nominate David Steffens and Jon Dean for their assistance with a file upload failure over Christmas Break for the final Pay in 2020. The two of them were able to diagnosis and recreate this file as well as upload it for us without a moment of hesitation while campus was on break. We greatly appreciate their expertise and trained skills as well as their willingness to handle such a time-sensitive issue even though they were technically off for the holiday break. GREAT JOB!!! Thank you so very much.

Awardees for October/November 2020

Congratulations to the following individuals/departments for receiving Pat-on-the-Back recognition for October/November 2020. Each candidate or office will receive a Pat-on-the-Back Award certificate.

I would like to extend a Pat-on-the-Back to Beth Zimmer and Doug Workman from the Biology Department. Both spent considerable time coming up with a creative solution to assist a student this past week. Their student-centered approach is always unwavering and very much appreciated.

I nominate Jennifer Saladin for all of the questions, responses, and assistance provided in a recent employee search. She is always so open to helping and also feedback/questions of the process and new ideas.

Raven Hills for the innovation she has brought to our Anti-Violence Alliance and work, especially kicking off Domestic Violence Awareness Month activities in a variety of creative ways, while still not fully on-boarded as a new staff member.

A huge Pat-on-the-Back to Angie Palmer for her work to support the various initiatives of Student Life’s team and students. Her helpfulness comes without question and genuinely tries to make so many of our work/lives better with her role on our team.

I would like to nominate all the fabulous custodians we have on campus that are working tirelessly to keep our buildings clean and safe. Whether it be sanitizing all touch surfaces throughout the day or sanitizing our buildings at night or any of the work they are doing that we don’t see to keep us safe. They are all greatly appreciate.

FLITE thanks our cleaning crew that is doing an exceptional job helping us keep our building clean and sanitized for the employees and students. Their wonderful work is helping keep FLITE safe and clean especially during this pandemic. They are as follows: Rachel Bonner, Tom Cousineau, Marcus Todd, Marci Dunn, Maralee Sayilik, Nick Culy and Mark Perez – performing the daytime disinfection.

FLITE thanks our locksmiths, Gary Chesebro and Scott Kosaki, for their diligent work updating keys and locks keeping FLITE security a priority.

Mike Grandy, thank you for stepping up last-minute to support the Promesa Scholars community and speaking at our semesterly Financial Literacy Night. You went above and beyond to pull together a presentation last-minute and give of your time and talent to our community.

Melanie Mulder and John Randle for staying up to date on serving Latinx students and families about the nuances the community faces in apply for FASFA and navigating scholarships. Thank you for presenting at our financial literacy night for Promesa Scholars and John for presenting at our first Instagram Live session about FASFA. You both are guerrilleros for the Latinx community.

Patrick Weisgerber for presenting at our Promesa Scholars financial literacy night and presenting tools for our students to stay in good standing with TIP and plan for phase 2 early in their college careers.

I would like to nominate Jeff Stewart, in Admissions, for a Pat-on-the-Back. Jeff is incredibly helpful in any way that’s needed. He takes on whatever is thrown his way with a smile, dedication and never a complaint. I am very grateful to be his colleague. Ferris is a better place because of him.

I am nominating the Purchasing Department for a Pat on the Back Award for all the updated training materials for requisitions on their website and MyFSU. I love that there are flowcharts, YouTube videos and couple different step-by-step manuals. I appreciate the hard work and time it took to update these materials. For someone who rarely does requisitions (and doesn’t want to appear incompetent or bother others with questions), these are super straight-forward and handy. Thank you.

Awardees for September 2020

Congratulations to the following individuals/departments for receiving Pat-on-the-Back recognition for September 2020. Each candidate or office will receive a Pat-on-the-Back Award certificate.

The below narratives were received …

The Automotive Department would like to nominate Karl Verrill, from IT, for a Pat-on-the-Back. Karl always resolves our issues promptly and goes above and beyond to be sure everything is working properly.

I would like to nominate Tom Morris (David L. Eisler Center) and his entire crew for all their work in making sure the UC Ballrooms are functioning classrooms. Changing course delivery has been a whirlwind for everyone, but Tom has been right there answering questions and making sure the rooms are running efficiently. The tremendous efforts of this staff have not gone unnoticed. Thank you!!

I would like to nominate Deb Buck for the Pat-on-the-Back Award! Deb is AMAZING! She works so hard and is truly dedicated to making Ferris State University and the College of Health Professions a better place! Thank you so much for all your hard work and dedication! We couldn't survive without you!

❤️

I would like to nominate someone for a Pat-on-the-Back Award. The nomination is for Teresa Fogel and how awesome she was at the traditions walk on Founders’ Day. That was such an amazing new addition to the day and students really enjoyed getting to know our campus and its history. Great job, Teresa 😊

Pat-on-the-Back Awards should go to Megan Innis, MaryKay MacIver, Tim Jacobs, Tim Blashill, Mark Schuelke, Melinda Isler, Nick Smith, Angela Roman and Katie Thomas. Thank you for all your help with the information, preparation and implementation of the first ever Traditions Walk! We had 20 participants between the three groups so it was a success and we plan to do it again.

I would like to nominate Melanie Mulder, from office of Scholarships and Financial Aid. She is the definition of a leader! Always thinking in a ‘student first’ mentality. She is always there to answer every question for every single person and department that needs her. It’s not an easy task to help multiple departments and students through multiple forms of communication (teams chat, emails, phone calls, Zooms and stopping by), but she always helps and ALWAYS with a smile and a laugh. Her dedication to make sure the student is taken care of is inspiring and thoughtful. Melanie has been helping students through a process that is already so complicated, throw in a pandemic, and it can be real messy! She makes it look easy, when in fact, it is not. Your hard work and dedication does not go unnoticed!

FLITE staff would like to thank Rachel Bonner, Marcus Todd and Tom Cousineau for their prompt actions and attention to the water line break at FLITE. They were proactive and prevented serious damage within the lower level and we appreciate that very much.

I would like to nominate Kris Keusch, senior IT application analyst, IT Services. We went to Kris with a few ideas of how to improve the in-kind process and left the meeting amazed. He took the time to listen and understand our process and offered suggestions we did not know were possible. This will create time saving procedures in our department and will make submitting in-kind donation receipts much easier for faculty and staff. THANK YOU KRIS KEUSCH.

I would like to nominate Jennifer Kailing-Wallace to receive a Pat-on-the-Back Award for going above and beyond helping others through the outstanding customer service she provides to all Ferris employees. Thank you.

I want to nominate Linda Randle for her expertise as an accountant here at Ferris. She supports the Investment Office each month by reconciling The Ferris Foundation’s endowment portfolio. That’s a huge undertaking each month, but once a year, she also performs the endowment scholarship transfer to move the annual endowment spending from the endowment pool to the individual scholarship funds that departments have awarded to deserving students. This requires meticulous attention to detail. Linda is an important member of our Finance unit. I am honored to work with her.

Joe (Strohkirch), You and your staff are a great example of collaboration and being innovative in these challenging times! I want to extend my deep appreciation to Allen Sutherby, Jason Swearingen, Russell Mishler and Zach Kipfmiller for the extraordinary work, the collaboration with other areas of the University, and going above and beyond outside of normal business hours. You all are great examples of helping our students enjoy the on-campus experience and helping to engage in community events.

Pat-on-the-Back Awards are given monthly. If there is someone you would like to nominate, please send your request to [email protected].

Thank you and  GO DAWGS!!!

When all was said and done, the student came away with a full schedule, housing, and feeling fantastic about starting classes on the first day. Thanks Jenice, Jeff and Bryan for the teamwork and dedication you have for assisting our newest Bulldogs!!

I would like to nominate Ashley Hawley for a Pat-on-the-Back. Ashley has been working tirelessly over the summer on our department’s software system. She does everything that needs to be done while maintaining a very positive, can-do attitude. She also led a very creative activity at our department retreat. I would like to nominate Charlotte Bongard for always being a rock for all accounting clerks/secretaries during the fiscal year-end. Charlotte takes some of the stress away that we all experience this time of year and not only does it with grace but politeness. My special thanks to Charlotte for a job well done.

I’d like to nominate Jason Swearingen for a Pat on the Back Award. He helped me troubleshoot a problem I’d been working on for weeks and fixed it in less than five minutes! While it’s not technically part of his ITS job, he was willing to stop by my office and help me get back to full functionality.

I would like to nominate Jeff Gabalis and Wes Thompson for all of the work they have done with captioning for the University. With looking at different options, testing them out and creating guides to help other faculty and staff members, they go above and beyond to meet the needs of many.
