Sustainability

a. Identify and dedicate consistent, steady resources to support sustainability projects across Ferris State University’s campuses.  

b. Develop and recruit a full-time sustainability focused coordinator to implement sustainability initiatives.  

c. Review, and if necessary, refresh existing sustainability committee to include key professional positions and provide meaningful student engagement.  

a. Decarbonizing energy systems on campus 

b. Transition to renewable energies, including renewable energy produced on site (e.g. solar/wind).  

c. Increase mobility options on campus to support pedestrian movement through walking/cycling.  

d. Support the availability and accessibility of public transportation options for the campus communities.  

e. Undertake long term planning to be an EV ready campus.  

a. Incorporate sustainable design standards and certifications into renovation planning and new facility construction.  

b. Prioritize stewardship of the Muskegon River watershed

1. Support Increase permeable surfaces on campus to reduce non-point source runoff.
2. Regularly monitor and assess campus drinking water

c. Undertake a campus wide environmental risk assessment.

d. Improve material management to accomplish waste stream reduction

1. Support and enhance campus recycling and composting efforts
2. Reduce food waste from university dining and catering

e. Shift landscape management to favor native vegetation and restore some mowed areas to natural vegetation.
