The Introduction Program was designed for an Antibiotic Ambassador, such as a volunteer college student, to go into a classroom and present followed by a science teacher completing the full Middle School Lesson Plan. However, the introduction program does not need the full program to follow for it to be effective, and can be used on its own by an ambassador or teacher. Both programs are designed for use in grades 5-8.

Program Description

The MARR Coalition supports the judicious use of antibiotics and encourages healthy habits to prevent infection. The 45-minute interactive presentation is designed for use with high school-aged students and includes information on the following:

1. Overview of antimicrobial resistance
2. Bacteria versus viruses
3. How antibiotics work
4. Antibiotic safety and side effects
5. Penicillin Allergies

This program was designed as a 30-minute to 1-hour, interactive presentation on how to prevent infections, including COVID-19, and how to use antibiotics safely.

With input from a variety of academic and community partners, the program was developed as a community service opportunity for university students in the state of Michigan. However, the content is relevant for anyone wanting to know more about the relationship between preventing infections and limiting antibiotic resistance. Tips on how to talk with your healthcare provider about antibiotic safety are included.

• What antibiotic resistance is, how it happens, and what you can do to help prevent it
