You are bound to have many questions as you think about and prepare for your study abroad experience. Below are some of the most common questions we are asked.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Where can I travel?
Students can go almost anywhere! At Ferris we maintain affiliation and exchange agreements with many international institutions. In addition, Ferris Students can participate in many other study abroad programs sponsored by other universities and organizations. When students participate with one of our partner schools they will be paying Ferris tuition and other fees to the host school. When participating in an affiliate program students will pay a program fee.
- Do I have to be fluent in a foreign language?
No, there are many programs taught in English all over the world.
- Will I receive academic credit for studying abroad?
Yes! With the appropriate approval signatures on your study abroad approval form, credits you receive while studying abroad can be transferred back to Ferris. Grades are not averaged into your cumulative average unless the program is faculty-led and organized by Ferris.
- How long can I study abroad?
You can study for just a few weeks in the summer, one semester, or one full academic year. The choice is yours.
- Can I afford to study abroad/will I continue to receive financial aid?
Yes, in fact, your financial aid can be based on the actual cost of your study abroad program including airfare, passport, and other miscellaneous fees related to your studies.
- Do I have to have a certain cumulative average to study abroad?
Eligibility will vary from program to program. In general, programs will require a 2.0 or better cumulative average (some faculty programs may require a higher GPA). A strong start in your freshman year will be very helpful, but there are programs of study or work abroad for all students. When in doubt, come in and talk to us about requirements for different programs.
- What accommodations are provided?
Housing arrangements vary among the study abroad programs. Some offer a room in a residence hall, or with a host family. Others offer a shared apartment. Meals may be provided in a dining hall, or kitchen facilities may be provided so that you can prepare your own meals.
- What are the application deadlines?
Deadlines vary according to the program. For semester programs, a semester ahead of time is usually appropriate. For summer programs, you should begin the application procedure in the Fall semester.
