Biography
Hello! I'm Professor Dan Scott, an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work and a licensed clinical social worker specializing in complex trauma and cult recovery. My research interests focus on the social construction of "value" and "risk" in Federal health policy. I have substantive expertise in socio-linguistics, anthropology of policy, and economic sociology, the history of the social work profession, and in qualitative interviewing and ethnographic research methods.
I've been a practicing social worker since 2010, and I've been involved in political advocacy since 1996. I strive to engage students in critical analysis of social work research methodology, expand interconnection between social science theory and practical lived experience in the field, and extend clinical practice into an understanding of how large scale social phenomenon like culture, governments and policies structure and "appear" in the clinical encounter.
Outside of academia, I enjoy outdoor sports and am an avid backpacker and mountain biker. I also enjoy composing and playing electronic music, playing Dungeons & Dragons, and spending time with my partner and our dog, Charlie.
