The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services recently announced a change that
allows 90,000 students enrolled in career and technical education colleges to be eligible
for food assistance benefits. Ferris State University students enrolled in career
and technical educational programs could be eligible for food assistance benefits
under new expansion. With the new initiative, college students will be eligible for
the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) if they are enrolled at least
half-time in school while seeking an occupational degree through the Perkins Post
Secondary CTE program. Ferris is one of three universities in Michigan which receives
funding through the Perkins Post Secondary CTE program, and offers students more than
20 occupational programs. Interested students should apply here.
Ferris: There's Food Here! is a way that the University community can share and post information on where the
free food and food deals are available on the Big Rapids campus using Facebook. This
system was created to help people. The site operates on the honor system. The aim
is to share food availability information with as many students as possible. Faculty,
staff, and students are encouraged to post pictures and information of where and when
free food is available on the Big Rapids campus.
This is not a food sustainability system. The frequency of food availability is unknown.
Membership to this group is open to all of the Ferris community. Let’s look out for
one another and be an ethical community.
