ESPN's Rece Davis to Speak at Ferris State Sports Speaker Series Event

Ferris State is set to welcome ESPN College Gameday host Rece Davis for its Sports Speaker Series on Wednesday. Hosted via Zoom, Davis is set to speak to attendees at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 29 as part of the final Sports Speaker Series presentation of the school year. Davis will join Ferris State alumni and current ESPN senior sports content researcher Gil Bransford as part of the Zoom presentation. "Gil came to me and he said, 'Hey, if I can get you another on air personality, would that be good for you?' And I said 'Gil, we would love it. This would be fabulous.' Ferris State's Spring Play Brings Dungeons and Dragons to Life

Elves, dragons and gelatinous cubes have taken over Ferris State University's theater department. This year's spring play, “She Kills Monsters” by Qui Ngyuen, runs March 22-26 in the Williams Auditorium, 630 S. Michigan Ave. The play is based on the popular tabletop game Dungeons & Dragons, as seen in the Netflix series “Stranger Things.” As the name implies, it features a large host of different monsters, from elves, kobolds, dragons and liches, to mimics, gelatinous cubes, shambling mounds, fairies and succubi. Ferris State University Celebrates Opening of $15.3 Million Athletics Facility

Ferris State cut the red tape on a new $15.3 million addition to the Ewigleben Sports Complex on Sunday. The Center for Athletics Performance and Bulldog Arena was officially unveiled Sunday, March 19, with speeches being given by university president Bill Pink, athletic director Steve Bronkelbank, Ferris football alum and donor Luke Piepkow, Ferris volleyball head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm, head strength and conditioning coach Andrew Thiede and volleyball student-athlete Syann Fairfield. Students Participate in Annual Cesar E. Chavez March in Grand Rapids

As red and white balloons soared over the Hispanic Center of Western Michigan, hundreds of Michigan students embarked on the 13th annual César E. Chávez March. Honoring what would have been Chávez’s 96th birthday, Ferris’ Center for [email protected] Studies sent roughly 50 students from Big Rapids to last Wednesday’s march and subsequent community gathering. Chávez’s catch phrase “¡Si se puede!” meaning “Yes, it is possible!” was chanted throughout the mile long march. Read more from the Ferris State Torch.

Ferris State University Students Sending Mini Satellite into Space as Part of New Class

Ferris State University students will be sending off a mini satellite into Earth’s orbit to learn about space cybersecurity as part of a unique new course the university is offering this spring. The class is part of the university’s robust Center for Cybersecurity and Data Science programming, which was recently selected for a partnership with the National Space Agency to help prepare students for careers in space cybersecurity, data analytics, database management and artificial intelligence. Read more from MLive.

State Taps Ferris State to Help Recruit Talent for Surging Electric Vehicle Sector

Ferris State University has been tapped to help the state of Michigan recruit talent to fill thousands of open jobs in the surging electric vehicle (EV) and transportation mobility sector. The university has received nearly $660,000 in state funding to create a new Ferris Center for Applied Battery Production and Testing, which will help cement West Michigan’s reputation for battery knowledge through applied research and partnerships with major manufacturers, Ferris State announced on March 3. Ferris State University to Expand its Jim Crow History Museum

Ferris State University in Big Rapids is home to a museum that educates students and visitors about Jim Crow-era segregation. Now it’s looking to expand into a larger home. The university is running out of space for its Jim Crow exhibits and parts of the museum have been damaged due to flooding. “The collection is at risk in the space that it’s in," said Kathy Mullins, vice president of advancement and marketing at Ferris State. "So we need to get it into a safe space and a larger space so that we can show the entire collection." Read the full story from Interlochen IPR.

Big Rapids Crossroads Graduate and Ferris Student Humbled by X Games Experience

Earlier this month, the winter X Games had 15 college students from across the nation attend and work the games, one of which was Ferris State University student Hannah Nunamaker. "Everybody had a specific job each day and we were able to rotate out so everybody was able to see every single part of the facility and production, which I thought was very cool, and a very eye-opening experience to see especially from like a learning perspective," Nunamaker said. Read the full story in the Big Rapids Pioneer.

Ferris Partners with MedStar to Employ Health Care Students

International nursing students at Ferris State University will get an opportunity to gain training and enhance their credentials thanks to a partnership between the university and MedStar. Ferris State announced it signed a partnership agreement Feb. 10 with MedStar, a nonprofit in Oak Brook, Illinois, that recruits and employs qualified candidates to conduct health care research. Dr. Bill Pink Adds Story to Mecosta County's Rich Black History

For Ferris State University’s first president of color, Dr. Bill Pink, Black History Month exists as an ideal opportunity to uplift black representation in education. After being sworn in as the university's 19th president back in May, Pink began connecting with the campus community and formulating his goals as its new leader. The Asian Student Organization Brought Back Their Lunar New Year Celebration

A toast to the Lunar New Year and welcoming the year of the rabbit. Jan. 26 was a busy day for the Asian Student Organization and the International Student Organization. Both registered student organizations came together to host a late celebration for the East Asian holiday. The Black Student Union Returns

The Office of Multicultural Student Services welcomed the reactivation of the Black Student Union. The BSU is a registered student organization that advocates for all Black students on campus, as well as students of other minorities. If a student voices their opinion during a meeting, the organization will contact relevant staff and faculty about the issue. They will also create petitions, march or protest for the matter if deemed necessary. Read the full story in the Torch.


The 2023 Ferris MATHCOUNTS Competition to be Fully In-Person

The 2023 Woodbridge Ferris MATHCOUNTS competition will be hosted fully face-to-face this year at Ferris State University. The event is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 3 at the David Eisler University Center at 805 Campus Drive on the campus of Ferris State in Big Rapids. The CountDown Round is open to the public and will begin at 12:15 p.m. The all-day national event features a variety of challenges for young students as they work through problems as individuals and in teams. This year, students from five area schools will participate: Big Rapids, Cadillac, Crossroads, McBain, and St Peter’s Lutheran. Chief Abe Haroon Takes the Oath of Office

After directing Ferris’ Department of Public Safety for one semester, on Thursday, Jan. 26, Abe Haroon took the oath of office to be officially sworn in as chief of police in the state of Michigan. “It’s the work of the constituents, the work of administration here, and the work of staff and faculty and students that really make it a beautiful place to work ...,” Haroon said. National Security Agency Partners with Ferris State to Boost University's Cybersecurity Training

To meet the growing national demand for skilled cybersecurity workers, Ferris State University is partnering with the National Security Agency (NSA) to help prepare its students for careers in space cybersecurity, data analytics, database management and artificial intelligence. The university has signed a five-year Education Partnership Agreement with the NSA to help boost the university’s science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programming to develop the talent and tools for protecting national security, Ferris State announced in a news release," read MLive for more information.

The Student Government Association Swears in President Engels

As the spring semester begins, medical laboratory science junior Cassidy Engles took the podium as the Student Government Association’s president for the first time last Tuesday. Engels explained that she has goals that she hopes to achieve during her time in the position. Specifically, she is trying to create an effective way to increase membership and meeting attendance. Ferris Community on the Importance of MLK Day

While it has been over half a century since Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated for championing the lives of Black Americans, his words still echo throughout the world, the country and this campus. The third Monday in January is commemorated as Martin Luther King Jr. Day, when people are encouraged to remember MLK’s dream that all people would have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as the country promised its citizens. Ferris Alumnus, Former Jackson County Deputy Eases Into New Role as Police Chief

After spending more than two decades as a Jackson County law enforcement officer, retirement wasn’t going to come easy for Dan Deering. Deering, 47, left his role as a deputy with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office in August after serving for about 24 years. This was a time before prospective police officers were required to have higher education beyond a police academy, though Deering graduated from Ferris State University with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice to make himself competitive, he said. Ferris Alumnus, Former Jackson County Deputy Eases Into New Role as Police Chief

A 24-year veteran of the Birmingham Police Department, Commander Scott Grewe was promoted and sworn in as the new Birmingham police chief at the city commission meeting on Monday, December 19, which also marked the retirement of former chief of nearly seven years, Mark Clemence. He earned his bachelor of science degree in criminal justice with a minor in multi-cultural relations from Ferris State University in 1998. More recently, Grewe expanded his education and is currently earning a master’s degree in public safety from the University of Virginia. Read more from Downtown Newsmagazine.

'Both Enlightening and Horrific:' Ferris State Alum Donates $10K to Jim Crow Museum

Ferris State University has announced it has received a $10,000 donation to expand its Jim Crow Museum. According to a news release, Matthew Nawrocki, an FSU alumnus and member of The Ferris Foundation’s Board of Directors, made the donation last week hoping to inspire more support from the community. Nawrocki, who graduated from Ferris’ College of Engineering Technology in 1995, visited the museum while touring campus last year. For more, visit WOOD TV 8.

Ferris State University has tapped the director of the Grand Rapids Community College Foundation to lead Ferris State’s advancement and marketing efforts. Kathryn K. The Quilts of Valor presented Lori Pink with a quilt prior to the Veterans Day Parade for her 28 years of service in the United States Air Force. Pink was the parade Grand Marshall this year and is also the wife to Ferris State President Bill Pink. A Day in the Life of President Pink

Do you start your day by waking up, having a nice workout and eating a banana and boiled eggs on the way to work? If you do, chances are you might be Ferris’ new president, Dr. Bill Pink. Pink offered the Torch a look into his daily life one week following his inaugural ceremony. Pink normally doesn’t like to schedule events until after 9:30 a.m. This gives him time to complete work in his office. On this day, however, technology students and faculty awaited Pink in the Granger Atrium for breakfast and a greeting to start the president’s day. Pink went to speak with students about the importance of our technology program and how they can use it to further their goals once they graduate, reports the Ferris State Torch.

Ferris Student, Music Producer Wins Remix Contest

Sean Prusko is a Ferris State student and house music producer who is double majoring in information security and music and entertainment business. His majors overlap in unique ways that help him succeed in his music business. Prusko recently won a contest hosted by Leon Bolier, the owner of a house label company, where he produced a remix of the song “Love,” by Danny Quest. Ferris State Hopes to Capitalize in Massive EV Battery Plant Project

The final phases are still yet to be completed but the massive battery plant in Mecosta County seems to be a go. Bringing in thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in investments, the Gotion Inc. battery plant has been approved by local and state officials. Sean Astin of "The Lord of the Rings Trilogy", "The Hobbit" and the 1993 film "Rudy" is scheduled to speak on mental health and representation at Ferris State University on Thursday, Oct. 6. A state board has approved hundreds of millions of dollars in tax exemptions and performance-based grants to help lure two large battery manufacturing projects that promise more than 4,000 jobs and nearly $4 billion in investment. New Ferris President, Dr. Bill Pink kicked off his “Link with Pink Tour” in Big Rapids, Michigan at Cranker's Brewery. This first event of many across the state was intended for local alumni to meet with President Pink and discuss future plans for Ferris State. Pink’s speech focused on his strategy to increase enrollment and strengthen connections with the Big Rapids school system and community. With the recent decision to add a third cohort in the nursing program, Spectrum Health is excited to see what it can bring to their local hospitals. New Ferris State University President Bill Pink, whose presidency started on Monday, July 11, is ready to go on the road to engage alumni and friends across Michigan, writes the Midland Daily News. The “Link with Pink” Tour includes eight stops beginning in Big Rapids, the home of Ferris’ main campus. Future tour stops include major cities of the lower peninsula, including Midland on Thursday Sept. 29.

Ferris State University has partnered with Ten16 Recovery Network and Scott Winkle to provide students with sustainable recovery, alcohol-free lifestyles, and engaging and empowering those impacted in any way by addiction. Winkle hopes to use his experience to help others in the process, as well as help get rid of the stigma and create a supporting and uplifting community surrounding addiction. County Applies for State Disaster Funds for Ferris State

In May, Big Rapids was hit with four and a half inches of rain in less than a two hour period causing an estimated $500,000 in damages on campus. Mecosta county officials are requesting financial assistance from the state for these damages on behalf of Ferris State University. Read more in the Big Rapids Pioneer.

Ferris Senior Serves Up Private Cocktails in New Business

Celeste Littrup, Ferris senior, is looking to hit the ground running with her new private bartending business, Happier Hour. Littrup’s previous bartending experience and current marketing and sales studies has helped her tremendously in developing her new private catering business. Her goals are to cater directly to customers' beverage needs according to event, whether this be with cocktails and/or alcohol free beverages. With her background in marketing, Littrup hopes to be able to successfully market herself to the city of Big Rapids as a start, but eventually provide these services to all of West Michigan. Ferris hospitality student and Grand Rapids native, Anna Jensen, uses the market every Friday as a way to get away from school and work for a bit. She offers a variety of products including essential oil rollers, eggs, muffins, blankets, bath salts, t-shirts, and more. Detroit Red Wings Name Tampa Bay Lightning Assistant, Former Ferris State Assistant as Head Coach

Steve Yzerman has chosen Derek Lalonde, a former Ferris State University assistant coach, as the head coach to lead the Detroit Red Wings on their next step in the rebuild, the franchise announced Thursday. The path of promoting a newcomer to the NHL head coaching ranks is one Yzerman has chosen twice before. John Monahan, Ferris Alumni, is in charge of one of the most popular vendors at the Big Rapids Farmers market, Jacks Kettlecorn. Michigan Veterans Head to Washington D.C. to Visit Memorials through Honor Flight

Veterans throughout Michigan got the chance to experience Washington D.C. and the many memorials commemorating their service to this country. On Tuesday morning, 77 Veterans departed from Ferris State University and traveled via police escort to Gerald R. Ford International Airport, where they would fly to Washington D.C. to visit the World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War Memorials, the Women Veterans Memorial, and the changing of the Guard at Arlington Cemetery. The Jim Crow Museum’s latest addition to its collection of thousands of racist  artifacts was brought in by Mike Wolfe of “American Pickers.” The Jim Crow Museum is a space where individuals come to learn about racism that has occurred and continues to occur in our country. Because the museum hosts thousands of artifacts and pieces that share the stories of what life was like for African Americans under Jim Crow, they are unable to showcase everything they have at the moment, including a new piece brought in by Wolfe. KCAD Student Aims to Represent her Hispanic Heritage in Mural for Anti-Racism Art Project in Grand Rapids

By signing on as a muralist for an anti-racism project, artist and college student Wanda Aguilar hopes to bring her community and culture together by validating the experiences of her Hispanic neighbors. The Diatribe, a Grand Rapids-based arts and culture nonprofit, launched the 49507 Project it describes “as an artist and youth-led community celebration commissioning seven local Black and Brown artists for large scale murals on prominent buildings in majority Black and Brown neighborhoods” in the 49507 Zip code. Dr. Bill Pink named Ferris State University’s 19th president. Ferris State University (FSU) in Big Rapids, Michigan, has named Dr. Bill Pink as its next president, making Pink the first Black individual to helm the institution when he begins his service in July, pending board approval.

GRCC President Pink picked to lead Ferris State

Ferris State University announced Thursday that they have received $101,058 grant for their Early Learning Center from the Michigan Department of Education. According to a press release sent by Ferris State University, Early Learning Center manager Lori Johnson says the Child Care Sustainability Grant allows them to reward workers who found themselves in unique roles as the COVID-19 pandemic brought them to remote operations for 2020 from March to Aug. Ferris MATHCOUNTS Event Set for February 2022

The 2022 Woodbridge Ferris MATHCOUNTS is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 17, 2022. Present plans are to have the event on the campus of Ferris State. This all-day event features a variety of challenges for young math minds as “Mathletes” working as individuals and in teams," reports the Big Rapids Pioneer. MATHCOUNTS is a nationwide math enrichment program for sixth through eighth-graders. The local event is sponsored by the Big Rapids Chapter of the Michigan Society of Professional Engineers with financial support from the Ferris State College of Engineering Technology and Cargill. Currently, five schools have signed up: Big Rapids, Cadillac, Crossroads, McBain and St Peter’s Lutheran.

Ferris' Michigan College of Optometry Provides Free Eye Exams

This week, Ferris State University hosted the Michigan College of Optometry's Students in Need of Eyecare program which provides free exams and glasses for kids in the area, reports the Big Rapids Pioneer. Thirty-eight elementary and middle school students from Fremont and Hesperia Schools were bused to Big Rapids, received comprehensive, dilated eye examinations, and ordered glasses if needed through the program, a partnership between the Fremont Lions Club and Michigan College of Optometry.

Ferris State Finds Cost-Effective Way to Conduct COVID Tests

Students and faculty from Ferris State University’s College of Pharmacy and  College of Health Professions conducted a COVID-19 testing study for the journal, Exploratory Research in Clinical and Social Pharmacy," as reported by the Grand Rapids Business Journal. The study found the BD Veritor antigen-based testing program was a more cost-effective way of providing an accurate test to determine if student athletes who practice without a mask can contract the COVID-19 virus and be asymptomatic, as opposed to solely depending on the polymerase chain reaction testing or the PCR method. New Artificial Intelligence Program Begins at Ferris

Five-month schedule is underway to develop Ferris State University’s $29.5 million Center for Virtual Learning on the Big Rapids campus. The future facility, planned for the site of the former Vandercook Hall, will be home to Information Security and Intelligence, the School of Digital Media, School of Education, eLearning and the new Artificial Intelligence program. Faculty started offering Artificial Intelligence instruction this summer. By late 2022, AI and Information Security and Intelligence expect to move to the Center for Virtual Learning. An 80-page report from the Higher Learning Commission marks the second consecutive review from which Ferris State University has earned a clean evaluation in meeting all criteria and expectations for accreditation.
