Amanda Matheson, Ferris State University’s new vice president of Administration and Finance, comes to the university with a wealth of experience in the financial and operations area, and a longtime interest in education.

Matheson, who joined the Ferris State team last month, worked in the Grosse Pointe Public Schools as the deputy superintendent of Business Operations and Support Services for four years. She oversaw non-instructional services, including buildings and grounds, enrollment, finance, food service and transportation operations.

She also served as chief financial officer of the Ann Arbor Public Schools and business manager for the Sault Ste. Marie Public Schools was a senior auditor for Rehmann, a professional advisory firm based in Cheboygan.

“The position of vice president of Administration and Finance is vital for us to be successful in our mission of serving our state and providing life-changing opportunities,” Ferris State President Bill Pink said. “Mandy’s expertise in education administration will help us manage our resources – both people and financial – and ensure we are able to move forward in the best way possible for our campus community.”

Matheson is a Sault Ste. Marie native who followed in the footsteps of family members in the accounting field.
Her work as an auditor called for traveling around the area, working with several types of companies, educational institutions, and governments and developed an interest in academia.

That led to her role in Ann Arbor Public Schools – one of the largest K-12 districts in the state – and then a move to Grosse Pointe. As deputy superintendent, she was responsible for the district’s finances and various operational duties.

She was interested in Ferris State, seeing an opportunity to apply the skill set she developed throughout her career to higher education.

Matheson has a master’s degree from Northern Michigan University, an undergraduate degree in Accounting from Lake Superior State University and holds a license as a Certified Public Accountant in Michigan.

Matheson replaces Jim Bachmeier, who retired in September after being at Ferris State since 2019.
