Admissions applications up

Ferris State University has announced the number of students applying to attend during October 2023 increased by 73 percent from the previous year, sparking Ferris State leaders to set up admissions and financial aid hotlines to assist students looking to enroll.

The number of students applying to attend Ferris State University during October increased by 73 percent from the previous year, sparking university leaders to set up admissions and financial aid hotlines to assist students looking to enroll.

University leaders say the increase is likely tied to students of all ages learning about educational opportunities that will prepare them for rewarding careers and taking classes in a supportive environment with resources to help them succeed.

“As more and more people hear the Ferris State story, they are becoming aware of the opportunities this university provides for them to gain a quality education that will lead to rewarding careers,” President Bill Pink said. “Our mission has been unwavering for nearly 140 years, to help everyone get the education they want to be successful. For many people, now is the time to start down that pathway.”

October is “Application Month” at Ferris State, and the number of applications jumped from 3,485 in 2022 to 6,017 this year. The number of students applying to transfer from a community college or other higher education institution jumped 31 percent, and the number of students applying from the Big Rapids area climbed 25 percent.

The Ferris State Admissions Department created two hotlines to assist students.

Anyone seeking help with applications, transcripts, visits, orientation, and other admissions features can call (231) 591-2000 or email [email protected].

Students can get assistance with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid – also known as FAFSA – by calling 231-591-2110 and emailing [email protected]. The team can also assist with questions about scholarships, grants, and loans.

A Ferris State application is free and can be found at ferris.edu/apply.

“The application is the first step, and now we are ready to help students complete the process and help them enroll in classes that will change their future,” said Jeanine Ward-Roof, vice president of Student Affairs. “We can assist with questions about all that Ferris State offers and tell them about cost-saving opportunities like the Ferris Pledge, where eligible students can bring together the Michigan Achievement Scholarship and Pell Grant to attend with zero out-of-pocket expenses.”

Ferris State offers classes on its main campus in Big Rapids, the Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University in Grand Rapids, and statewide online and through partnerships with community colleges.
