Margo Berke’s work, a sample of which is pictured here, will be on display this summer in the Fine Art Gallery of the David L. Eisler Center at Ferris State University.

The Fine Art Gallery in Ferris State University’s David L. Eisler Center will debut the works of two Big Rapids-based artists on Thursday, June 1. Margo Berke’s and Marlies Manning’s art will remain on display through Friday, Aug. 4.

Fine Art Gallery Director Carrie Weis said the exhibit “Continuing The Journey” is an opportunity to showcase Berke’s pastels and Manning’s watercolor images. The long-time friends explore the evolutionary expression of fine and functional art.

“Both women are very active in our community, and I’ve had the pleasure of working and collaborating with them on various creative projects throughout the years,” Weis said. “Margo and Marlies embody what it means to be dedicated to their practice, and it is reflected in the continual progression of their imagery.”

Berke is also adept in ceramics and spends time with her family operating a hobby vineyard outside Big Rapids. Manning lives in Big Rapids, retiring after a career as a landscape architect. Weis said Berke has entered into capturing rural countryside scenes, while Manning’s creations are rich with texture and light, both in indoor and outdoor environments.

“I have watched their styles change through experimentation, continued learning through masterclasses and workshops, and through their desire to hone artistic skills,” Weis said. “This body of work is, without a doubt, some of their strongest efforts to date.”

The reception for this exhibit starts at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 6, with Berke and Manning participating in a discussion of their works. Weis said the public is welcome to enjoy that event and visit the exhibit this summer.

“Supporting local artists is a core value of the gallery and it is my pleasure to exhibit the work of two leading artists in our community,” Weis said.

The Fine Art Gallery hours for Summer 2023 semester are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, with the Ferris campus closed on Tuesday, July 4. For more information on this exhibit, contact Weis by email or call (231) 591-2536.
