Ferris State University kicked off its summer orientation sessions on Monday, June 12, welcoming nearly 200 new students to the Big Rapids campus on day one. While many aspects of new-student orientation are now handled online, before the 2023-24 academic year, traveling to Big Rapids still sparks enthusiasm for new students during the on-campus portion of orientation.

James Kruszynski, of West Branch, is still reviewing options but plans to start academically in the General Studies program. Kruszynski, a native of Panama, received positive advice that helped shape his higher education choice in enrolling at Ferris.

“My girlfriend’s grandmother has told me about all the fun she had in her days as a student here,” he said. “When I told others that I knew about my plans to attend Ferris, those students had many good things to say about the university and my choice.”

Kruszynski progressed through the Fine Art Gallery in the David L. Eisler Center, where students check in with the Housing and Residence Life staff before reviewing their accounts with the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.

This orientation visit was not his first exposure to campus, however.

“I attended an Admitted Student Open House earlier this year,” Kruszynski said. “North Hall would be a great place to spend my first year on campus.”

More broadly, the Admissions staff was pleased with registration levels for the first week of orientation. The team expects approximately 200 more students to visit campus on Tuesday, June 13, and Thursday, June 15.

Admissions anticipates 1,500-plus students to attend summer Ferris orientation sessions offered three days a week, during the weeks of June 19, July 10 and July 17. The first day of classes for the 2023-24 academic year is Monday, Aug. 28.
