Becca Osborne, the first full-time coordinator of Ferris State University’s LGBTQ+ Resource Center, has entered this role with optimism that greater awareness and community engagement are possible. Osborne welcomes all students to the office and its programs.

In November, Osborne began their duties in the center on the lower level of the David L. Eisler Center. A 2021 graduate of the University of Findlay, Osborne earned bachelor’s degrees in Criminal Justice and Psychology.

“I wanted to get right into program presentation for students across campus but have been orienting myself with what offerings were already available, to see what was stable and well-received by participants,” Osborne said. “My student staff and I are incorporating tabling and awareness events to offer larger programming opportunities to engage the Ferris community and show that everyone is welcome.”

Osborne’s leadership experiences include five years with UNITED, the gay/straight alliance at Findlay.

“We had what equates to a registered student organization here. I was part of UNITED for my entire experience at Findlay and served as an officer on various committees,” Osborne said. “We functioned as a support group and exchanged information, particularly with Spectrum of Findlay, a nonprofit collaborative partner. I see similarities between Findlay and Big Rapids in my short time with Ferris.”

Osborne said as the first full-time coordinator for the LGBTQ+ Resource Center, she is encouraged by the response from visitors and other contacts on campus.

“We have had a lot of positive feedback from the students thus far, especially when it comes to new programs and ideas,” Osborne said. “They seem most happy that I am here and looking to support them. My hope is to add small events to our schedule and pursue collaborative opportunities in the community so important resources are available to everyone involved.”

The LGBTQ+ Resource Center is in Room 120C of the David L. Eisler Center. The office number is (231) 591-2658, and Osborne is available by email.
