Ferris State University’s efforts to create and maintain a safe environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors have been nationally recognized. The university has been ranked among the nation’s safest campuses.
The National Council for Home Safety and Security has ranked Ferris No. 23 on its list of the nation’s safest campuses. Ferris, enrolling more than 13,000 students, was among five Michigan universities ranked in the top 100. Rankings were determined by the most recent data from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting and the U.S. Department of Education’s Campus Safety Security Survey.
“I am pleased to see that Ferris is so high on the list. We work very hard to keep people safe, and to make them feel safe,” said Bruce Borkovich, director of Ferris’ Department of Public Safety. “I think it is part of the great Ferris experience that so many of our students share when they graduate.”
Nearly all accredited institutions were considered for the rankings, “save for those with enrollment under 10,000 students, and others for which a significant amount of data was unavailable.” A school’s safety score was based on analyzation of reported crimes. Other factors include property crimes or violent crimes for the cities in which the schools were located and the number of officers that are employed by an institution per 1,000 students.

Other Michigan-based universities ranked by NCHS include: Oakland University, Central Michigan University, Michigan State University and the University of Michigan.
Ferris State University is a four-year public university with campuses in Big Rapids,
Grand Rapids and satellite campuses across the state of Michigan. Ferris offers more
than 180 educational programs, including doctorates, master’s, bachelor’s and associate
degrees, through eight academic colleges: Arts, Sciences and Education, Business,
Education and Human Services, Engineering Technology, Health Professions, Kendall
College of Art and Design, Michigan College of Optometry and Pharmacy.
