A Letter to Students from the Dean of Student Life, Joy Pufhal

Joy Pufhal and Nick CampauWELCOME BULLDOGS!

Sorry to be shouting ... I am just so happy you are here!

As a new student, we are so excited that Ferris is about to become your home. As a returning student, we celebrate your return to campus and welcome you back with Bulldog spirit and pride. This year we want you to really know what it means to BE A BULLDOG.

Be a Student: Your academic endeavors will set you on a path for the rest of your life. Go to class! This is the single most important step in achieving success in your classes. Participate in class, sit in the front row, take time to listen and learn from others in your classrooms. Your success in the classroom is our first priority, and with the move of the Academic Support Center into the Library (FLITE), we want to make being a student first, as stress-free as possible for you.

Be a Friend: Regardless if you’re a new student or a returning student, we have a LOT of new faces on campus. Two thousand, six hundred and counting, to be exact. New faces in classes, in your residence hall or apartment complex, and in student organizations are opportunities for you to connect with someone new, share a meal or invite someone to attend a Bulldog Beginnings event with you. With so many opportunities (and challenges) in college, we know how important it is to have a strong support system of friends. Look out for one another and meet someone new at every opportunity.

Be a Leader: We have a responsibility to uphold our University Core Values of Collaboration, Diversity, Ethical Community, Excellence, Learning and Opportunity. Thank you for continuing to conduct yourself in alignment with these ideals and for expecting the same from others.
Student Code of Community Standards

Be Active: The Student Recreation Center opens on Monday, Aug. 27 after an ASTONISHING renovation this summer – with over 7,000 new square feet to work out, hang out or get out (with #FerrisGetOutside) there is something for every student to truly be active.

Being is belonging. You belong here. You will thrive here. Take time as we transition from summer to the start of a bustling school year to just BE YOU! Find your niche on campus that helps you feel at home, connected and a Bulldog. And if you don’t know where to start, look for me. I’m Joy, your Dean of Student Life and interim Title IX Coordinator, and you can find me at almost every Bulldog Beginnings event, frequently grabbing lunch at the Rock or the Quad Café, and in/around the University Center where my office is located. An email is a formal way for me to say welcome – but I’d much rather meet you in person!

So you know who to look for, here I am in a picture with the handsome-ish Nick Campau, our Associate Dean of Student Life. He is pretty helpful too. Come find us. We are here to help.
