Eleven Music Industry Management Students to Receive the President's Innovation Award

Ferris State UniversityEleven Ferris State University Music Industry Management students have been selected to receive the National Association of Music Merchants President’s Innovation Award to attend the NAMM Show at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, Calif. in Jan. 22-25, 2015.

The award is $600 for each of the 11 MIM students and covers the cost of travel and lodging for the Winter NAMM Show. Students selected to receive the award were: Kari Bosen, of Lansing; Chelsea Broekema, of Ada; Kyle Carmack, of Brighton; Travis Hodder, of Sebewaing; Jake Kiliszewski, Oswego, Ill.; David Lebin, Carmel, Ind.; Mellisa Lewis, of Milford; Olivia Odette, of Grand Rapids; Daniel Trudgeon, Bessemer; Jake White, of Baldwin, MD.; and Brooke Windsor, of Linden.

Ferris’ Music Industry Management program is endorsed and supported by the NAMM. The organization sponsors two world-class trade shows per year and students attend at a lower cost. At these shows, students have opportunities to see the latest in music making products, performances by popular artists and benefit from special sessions and seminars designed for students planning a career in the industry.

“Students will be interacting with the business leaders in the music and products industry, along with all those people who love to make music with those products, and those businesses that love to sell and merchandise those products, and those businesses that manufacture all of those products,” said Lori Armstrong, MIM’s program assistant, who further noted that the NAMM Show is a members-only event. “Typically, the NAMM Show has more than 95,000 registered attendees.”

The NAMM Show also offers a variety of sessions in particular areas of the industry, including: marketing, social media, retailing, production, performance, sales, recording, finance and more. The show also offers music-related business, education and networking opportunities.

Students apply for award consideration and must complete an extensive application, write an essay and demonstrate how the music products industry is beneficial to their career goals, according to Armstrong. She added that students must submit two letters of recommendation and transcripts. Students qualify to apply through enrollment in an affiliated music business or music program with a 3.0 grade point average.

The NAMM Foundation delivers several specialized sessions through its Generation Next program where Music Business and music majors may attend and receive additional insight about the music industry from industry leaders. The majority of the show’s sessions are interactive, allowing students to network and ask questions.
