Welding Engineering Technology Students Awarded $24,000 in Scholarships

The American Welding Society Detroit Section awarded more than $24,000 in scholarships to 21 Ferris State University students majoring in Welding Technology and Welding Engineering Technology. The students were recognized at the society’s annual Student Awards Night on Thursday, Sept. 12 at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor.

The AWS Detroit Section has contributed more than $525,000 in scholarships to Ferris WET students since 1986.

“We appreciate all the support that the American Welding Society Detroit Section has given our students throughout the years,” said Jeff Hardesty, coordinator and associate professor of the university’s Welding Engineering Technology Program.

To be eligible for the scholarship, students were required to submit an application along with their transcript and a letter that included their background, goals and ambitions.

The AWS Detroit Section awards the one-year scholarships to students pursuing an associate or bachelor’s degree in welding-related fields as a way to ensure the future of manufacturing in the United States.

Established in 1984, Ferris State’s nationally recognized Welding Engineering Technology program is one of the largest of its kind in the United States. The program is designed to produce graduates who are directly involved in the implementation of welding processes.
