Keeping Yourself Healthy

Staying healthy is key part of having a successful semester. Here are some tips to keep you feeling your best!  

COVID is affecting our communities, even though the pandemic is over. COVID cases are low in our counties. But we want to reach out after seeing increased numbers reported nationally.    

  • If you feel sick, stay home and consult with your physician.
    • Students, the Birkam Health Center can same day sick appointments for students. Visit the Birkam Health Center Appointments link for more information.  Students who are feeling ill will be required to wear a mask upon arrival at the center.
  • The Center for Disease Control recommends those age 6 and older keep their COVID-19 vaccines up to date. Many pharmacies and local physicians offer the vaccines.  Use this website to find a site near you.


    • Over-the-counter antigen tests are available in a limited capacity in Human Resources and at Birkam Health Center.
      • Students, Birkam offers free antigen or rapid (COVID only) testing at the front desk with no appointment necessary.  The center continues to offer testing to ill individuals by rapid or PCR testing who are seen by appointment with the provider.  
    • Other low or no-cost testing sites are available throughout the state of Michigan. Use this link link to find a location near you.
    • The university will continue to test campus wastewater to monitor COVID-19 virus levels in the campus community. Results will be used to communicate any concerns regarding levels of the COVID-19 virus to affected locations in the campus community.  


Masks are not required, but students can obtain them from Birkam Health Center and employees can obtain them from Human Resources.    

Class attendance 

Birkam will provide students with notes for professors if they are diagnosed with COVID or sick with other upper respiratory or gastrointestinal illness on a case-by-case basis. The best practice is to stay home when you are sick!  Telehealth visits are also available for students as needed.

If you test positive for COVID-19, the CDC recommends isolation for five days and if no symptoms on day six or when symptom-free, wearing a mask for five days following.  See CDC website for more details

Support your immune system to maintain good health! 

Your immune system is affected by everything you do, including what you eat, how much you sleep, your stress levels. This means that eating regular and balanced meals, hydrating with lots of water and getting seven to nine hours of sleep each night can help strengthen your body.
