BIG RAPIDS, Mich. —

Jonathen Hart didn't come to Ferris State University just to earn a degree. He strived to make an impact — and succeeded.

Hart, a sports communication major from Burton, Mich., graduates in May 2026 with national academic recognition, a fundraising record and a professional opportunity waiting in North Dakota.

His academic work drew attention beyond campus when he earned a Top Student Paper award and contributed to a Top Panel at the Central States Communication Association conference. He also finished as a national runner-up in speech and debate — achievements he said represent something larger than personal accolades.

"Ferris talks a lot about building champions, and most people immediately think of athletics," Hart said. "Those moments show that Ferris is building champions in every space, not just on the field."

Hart's impact extended into the community as well. He led the 20th annual Red Out fundraiser this past February, raising just over $4,000 for the Corewell Women's Cardiac Unit — a program record. The event, hosted by the communication program, spanned two basketball games and a hockey game and featured a silent auction of Ferris State athletics memorabilia.

"Big Rapids isn't Big Rapids without Ferris, and Ferris is not Ferris without Big Rapids," Hart said. "It's only right that the university does its part to give back."

After graduation, Hart heads to Grand Forks, N.D., where he joins the Grand Forks Spitfires Softball organization as an entertainment and sponsorship activation intern. The Spitfires are entering their inaugural season in the Northwoods League. Hart previously interned with the Minot Hot Tots, another Northwoods League organization, and said that experience drew him back to the region.

"Being part of a first-year team is a unique opportunity," Hart said. "I'm grateful for the chance to help build something special from the ground up."

Hart credits Ferris State with preparing him to pursue those opportunities.

"If you find your thing, Ferris will not stop until you are able to succeed," he said.
