Dorm room essentials for the Ferris State freshman

Heading off to college is exciting, especially if you're moving into a dorm for the first time. If you’re going to school somewhere like Ferris State, you'll want to come prepared for all kinds of weather, dorm spaces, and the basics of campus living. Here’s a realistic guide on what you should pack to make your college move-in smooth and your dorm room feel like home.
Dorm Room Basics
Your room will only come with a bed, desk, and dresser, so the rest is up to you.
- Twin XL bedding - sheets, comforter, pillows
- Mattress topper - this is extremely necessary
- Under-bed storage bins - great for all the extra little stuff you can’t find room for
- Command hooks and strips - for lights, towels, keys, etc.
- Desk lamp - some dorm lighting is awful
Bathroom & Hygiene Stuff
Most dorms have share bathrooms with roommates/suitemates, so bring your own supplies.
- Shower caddy - non-negotiable
- Towels - at least 2–3
- A washcloth or loofah
- Toiletries - toothbrush, soap, shampoo, etc.
- Toilet paper - sometimes dorms run out…
- Small mirror - for your desk if you’re getting ready there
Laundry Supplies
Yes, you’ll have to do your own laundry.
- Laundry hamper or basket - ones with wheels are the best
- Detergent
- Dryer sheets
- Stain remover spray - college gets messy
School + Desk Supplies
You don’t need to bring an office, but a few basics go a long way.
- Laptop and charger - likely the first thing on your list
- Stationery - notebooks, pens, highlighters, etc.
- Sticky notes or index cards
- Backpack - that’s comfy to carry in all types of weather
- Headphones - especially for shared rooms and walks to class
Food & Kitchen Stuff
You won’t always feel like walking to the dining hall. Be ready for a late night snack.
- Mini fridge
- Microwave - if your roommates don’t already have one
- Reusable water bottle and coffee mug - just a few
- Microwavable bowls, utensils, and plates
- Easy, pre-made snacks
Cleaning Supplies
A clean dorm is a happy dorm, and it’ll smell better too.
- Disinfecting wipes or spray
- Mini broom and dustpan or handheld vacuum
- Trash bags - bring more than you think you’ll need
- Air freshener or plug-in
ClotheS
Michigan weather is unpredictable so be sure to pack smart.
- Layered outfits: T-shirts, hoodies, jackets
- Winter gear - coat, boots, gloves, scarf, hat
- Rain jacket and umbrella
- Comfortable shoes - for walking across campus
- Lounge clothes and pajamas
- Workout clothes - especially if you plan to use the Rec Center
Extras That Make Life Easier
These aren’t “must-haves” but they seriously help.
- Fan - some dorms don’t have AC in early fall
- Power strips with surge protection
- Phone charger - extra-long ones are great
- Toolkit - screwdriver, scissors, tape, etc.
- Decor - posters, string lights, photos of home
Tips for first-time Michigan College Students
- Snow boots and a snow brush if you have a car - the snow here is real
- A warm robe or fuzzy socks - they will save you in the winter
- A portable charger - great for long days on campus
- Talk to your roommate before move-in to avoid bringing two of everything - like a fridge or TV
